The Jharkhand student protests exposed a clear double standard.
Rahul Gandhi is part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand, yet he still spoke up for students and raised their concerns. Meanwhile, the BJP is the opposition in the state. Where was the BJP? Why didn't the media ask, "Where is the opposition?" or call the BJP a weak opposition?
When Congress raises issues related to students, paper leaks, or unemployment, many so-called liberals and "neutral" commentators say, "Don't do politics over students."
But when the BJP campaigns on the same issues and asks for votes in the name of students, no one says, "Don't politicize students."
The standard seems to change depending on which party is involved. If accountability is expected from Congress, it should be expected from the BJP as well.
