PANEL 3: Cross-Cutting Threats to the Principles of Democracy features @aslihankas82, Director, Silent Screams Exhibition Coordinator, Advocates of @silencedturkey on Civil Society in Turbulence: Legal Attacks, Defamations, and Restrictions. She emphasized that behind every number is a person, and behind every statistic a story that must be heard. Citing civil society documentation, she noted that the impacts on families are profound, including children experiencing detention and deaths reported in custody, along migration routes, or following restrictions on travel documents, with lasting consequences for social cohesion.
Ms. Kas underscored that the response must be rights-based and survivor-centered: safeguarding due process and the rule of law; protecting human rights defenders from reprisals; ensuring child-sensitive justice; expanding psychosocial, legal, and social services; and guaranteeing safe civic space. She concluded with a call to renewal a “metamorphosis” affirming that, despite adversity, civil society will continue to advance justice, freedom, and equality.
