Would you drive or ride in a car without a brake pad?
Would you go swimming in the ocean without a life jacket?
If not, would that show a lack of faith in God?
Before insurance companies, we had Ajo, Esusu, and cooperative societies. 🤝🏾💰
Our communities understood something powerful: when one person faced a financial challenge, everyone could contribute to help.
Our ancestors understood the value of protecting one another. Perhaps the goal is not to abandon that wisdom, but to build on it.
💭 Ajo, Esusu, and cooperative societies were more than savings systems. They were communities protecting their own.

What happens when several people need help at the same time? And who protects the group against a loss that its savings cannot cover?
This is where we can appreciate the role of insurance: combining the power of collective responsibility with a structured way to manage risk.
@The_Graduat1k5 @SolaAdesakin And it’s not even just how much you keep, it extends to how much you invest in financial security systems.
You can keep all the money in a housing project and one emergency like a fire outbreak takes everything down to zero.
This tweet just confirm why we all need financial security. Thats only the true source of financial protection
Two critical financial security instruments are Pension (for post-employment protection) and Life Insurance (protection during & after employment). I’ll focus on Life Insurance today.
Financial security is not Investment. Although, investment is embedded in most financial security
Tbh, investment is good and necessary, it grows wealth. But it doesn’t automatically offer financial protection. In a real emergency, investments can be illiquid, down in value, or not built enough yet. Financial protection is what keeps one shock from resetting your entire life.
Life insurance penetration in Nigeria is still hovering around ~1%. That means the vast majority of income earners are largely exposed.
What is Life Assurance?
A contract where an insurance company promises to pay a sum assured typically upon death (and in some cases, upon survival to a certain term) in exchange for premium
Main types in Nigeria
1. Term Life: Covers a fixed period (e.g 10–30 years). If death occurs within the term, payout is made. If not, it expires. Ideal for young professionals, parents, mortgage holders.
E.g A 35yrs old with ₦100m cover dies at 42. payout replaces income, clears debt, funds school fees.
2. Whole Life: covers you for life. Pays whenever death occurs. Useful for legacy planning and estate liquidity.
e.g A 50yrs entrepreneur takes ₦150m whole life policy for estate planning. If he passes at 78, ₦150m is paid to beneficiaries immediately, providing liquidity without selling family assets or businesses.
3. Endowment: Pays on death OR at maturity. Combines protection and disciplined savings. Often used for children’s education planning.
e.g A parent takes a 15yr ₦20m endowment policy for a 3yr child. If the parent dies in year 7, ₦20m is paid immediately. If the parent survives to year 15, the maturity value is paid, funding university education
4. Annuity: Provides periodic income, usually post-retirement (pension discussion for another day).
e.g A retiree invests ₦80m in an annuity plan. The insurer pays guaranteed monthly income for life. Even if the retiree lives to 95, payments continue, thus removing longevity risk.
Personal Life Insurance ≠ Employer Group Life.
Group life is employer sponsored, often limited to a multiple of salary, and tied to your job. It may not follow you when you resign, change jobs, get laid off, or retire. And in many cases, the cover amount is not sufficient to truly protect your family.
Personal life insurance is yours. You choose the sum assured, the duration, the beneficiaries, and you can add riders like critical illness, disability, accidental death. It stays with you regardless of your employer.
Group life is good. Personal life is very essential.
Why Life Insurance matters
• If you die, your family still needs rent, food, school fees, and stability.
• If you have a mortgage or loan, the bank will not cancel it because something happened to you.
• If you support your parents, siblings, or extended family, life insurance is how you protect them when you are no more or incapacitated
• If you fall critically ill and have a rider, treatment can be funded without selling assets at a loss.
Who should have it?
Every working adult. Salary earners, entrepreneurs, couples with obligations, anyone supporting parents, anyone with debt.
Common questions
-Can young people benefit? Yes, premiums are cheaper when young.
-Are claims paid? Yes, when proper disclosure is made and premiums are up to date.
-Is it affordable? Term cover is often cheaper than people assume.
- How much should I take? A starting rule is 5–10x annual income. Review as income grows.
Investment grows wealth. Life insurance protects wealth.

Nigerians can avoid slipping back into poverty by taking simple preventive measures. Look at how homes in the West; single-family, multi-family, rentals, commercial, always keep fire extinguishers at almost every corner.
They know anything can happen. Preparedness is protection.

Has this ever happened to you?
The moment you think/talk about an incident not happening to you is exactly when it happens to you!
If your answer is YES, then you should know that bad things like an accident, sickness etc., can happen to just anybody at anytime.
@akpos_kenneth@dreyszn@chude__ Insurance WILL pay for all the damages, if the total damage doesn’t exceed the policy limit. Otherwise, they will pay up to the limit and the driver will have to sort the rest.
@PsycheWizard@suchaboo And to avoid moving from luxury to penury…, You ensure you have a solid Health Insurance that have you covered because medical bills don’t send warning texts!
