Houthis have completed their takeover of the Bab al-Mandab area after seizing a key Red Sea island and the port of Mokha.

This gives them dominant positions overlooking one of the world’s most important shipping chokepoints, the narrow gateway between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, through which around 12% of global trade normally passes.

With the Strait of Hormuz already disrupted, this route has become the main alternative for Saudi oil exports.

The advance significantly increases Houthi (and Iranian) leverage over international shipping and energy flows.

Couple Digitally Arrested for Five Days

A couple in the Indian state of Gujarat was allegedly kept under virtual surveillance for 5 days by fraudsters posing as police and government officials, then threatened with arrest in a fake money-laundering case.

They were tricked into transferring ₹13 lakh. Police have arrested a Delhi-based accused allegedly linked to the network.

Genuine officials do NOT conduct “digital arrests” or ask you to transfer money for verification.

Ukraine reportedly struck targets across four Russian regions overnight, with the most significant damage reported in Saratov.

An Ozon logistics hub and the Saratov oil refinery were reportedly hit, while authorities in Volgograd confirmed debris struck an industrial facility and an apartment building. Ukrainian sources identified the industrial target as Lukoil’s Volgograd refinery.

Explosions were also reported in Engels, home to a Russian strategic bomber base, although no strike on the airfield has been confirmed. The Kaspiysk/Dagestan port area was reportedly targeted as well.

Some reports suggest cruise missiles were used alongside drones.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees the company is open to slowing the development of advanced AI systems, potentially in coordination with other AI labs, as safety concerns grow.

Philippines | Toxic fumes and intense heat hampered rescue efforts after a fire broke out aboard a passenger ferry travelling from Manila to Coron, Palawan.

Rescuers were able to board the vessel more than 40 hours later. At least five people have died, 43 have been rescued and 84 remain missing.

BRICS leaders meet in New Delhi on 12–13 September 2026 for the 18th Summit, hosted by India under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

Saturday’s closed session covers inclusive global governance and multilateralism. Sunday’s open session, joined by partner countries, focuses on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability for inclusive growth. A New Delhi Declaration is expected.

Agenda priorities include food and energy security, supply-chain resilience, digital public infrastructure and AI, trade and development finance, climate action and green energy.

Possible outcomes: endorsement of the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy 2030, new agriculture and customs initiatives, and progress on local-currency trade. High-stakes bilateral talks are also likely, including Modi’s meetings with Xi Jinping (first India visit in seven years) and Putin.

The summit will test whether the expanded grouping can deliver practical cooperation for the Global South amid geopolitical differences.

The cargo ship Ocean Melody was in port for repairs in Qingdao when flames broke out this morning.

Seventeen people got off. Five of them were hurt. The other 25 did not survive.

Fire on cargo ship in Qingdao, China.

A fire broke out this morning on the Liberia flagged bulk carrier Ocean Melody.

The ship was under repair at Qingdao Beihai shipyard.The blaze started at about 11:15 local time.

Firefighters put it out by 14:30.There were 42 people on board. Twelve got off safely. Five are in hospital in stable condition. Rescuers have confirmed 20 dead. Five people remain unaccounted for.

President Xi Jinping ordered urgent rescue work and a full investigation. Premier Li Qiang called for the injured to be treated and for secondary disasters to be prevented.

August 2026 was the warmest August ever measured.

It also tied July 2023 as the hottest month of any kind in the modern record.

The global average air temperature was 16.96°C.

That is about 0.01°C above July 2023. Copernicus treats the two months as joint records.

August sat 1.65°C above the 1850–1900 average for that month.
It was the first month above 1.5°C since November 2025. That is a monthly reading, not the long-term Paris Agreement average.
Seas were also very warm.

Extra-polar ocean surface temperatures hit a record for August and tied the highest monthly ocean mark on record.

Copernicus points to two drivers: long-term warming from greenhouse gases, and a strengthening El Niño in the Pacific.

Western Europe had its hottest summer on record.
Europe as a whole had its third-warmest summer.

The Copernicus dataset starts in 1940. Scientists also use ice cores and other records to compare today’s climate with the more distant past.
