The upcoming storm should be taken seriously; it's hitting a large desert area that can't absorb water; will certainly be leading to flooding.
Buildings in California may not be as reinforced as those in Florida; even a tropical storm can cause significant damage.
Southern California homes should be checked for earthquake readiness; extra straps and clamps could help against storm damage.
If possible, move your car far from trees to avoid storm damage.
To keep food cold during power outages, fill water bottles 3/4 full and freeze them.
Fill your bathtub with clean water to maintain a water supply and flush the toilet, if needed.
Prepare for a loss of electricity by gathering batteries, small solar-powered lamps, or generators, if available.
Have activities like reading or playing board games prepared to pass time during the storm.
Avoid beaches, as the storm surge can quickly recede and then rush back in, with a potential of causing fatal incidents.
Remain in the center areas of your house away from windows due to risk of tornadoes spawned by the storm.
After the storm, check on neighbors who may need assistance.
Set your phone to "text only" to save its battery and get accurate updates about the situation.
Clear as much debris as you can to ease emergency responders' path.
Watch out for potential looters following the storm
Seek out reliable information sources for updates after the storm.
