Geography teacher from the UK, working in international schools.
Passionate about powerful knowledge and skill rich curriculums.
Currently teaching in Thailand
-History teaches us to interrogate sources
-Maths teaches us to think procedurally and logically
-English leads us into examining narrator and character motives and perspective
-Religious studies teaches us that faith claims and truth claims are often divergent
-Science teaches us to test our hypotheses, and to lean on tangible evidence.
Etc.
The architecture and foundation of critical thinking are imbedded and embodied by the disciplinary skills intrinsic to the existing taxonomy of academic subjects.
It’s not an assembly on why Andrew Tate is bad (which he is) or Facebook is stuffed with inane rubbish (which it is). It’s the whole academic experience of a school’s curriculum- when taught thoroughly.
coasts 🌊
A unit with an emphasis on describing and explaining the processes and changes occurring at the coastline
There's good coastal management DME less which is used as a piece of formative assessment and an opportunity to use cake for the cave-arch-stack formation lesson

West Africa 🌍
A new SoW for me this year! It was great to dive into an area of the world which is changing so rapidly and has so many examples of the impact of human and physical geography
A super interesting chapter on how a doctor uses international waters to avoid restrictive abortion laws for women who cannot get abortions in their own country.
Just some of the books which I have referenced and used in my geography teaching over this year🧵
I'm passionate about subject specific reading at KS3. By using examples from great authors and journalists in lessons it exposes students to the variety of reading available to them
The Outlaw Ocean - Ian Urbina
A collection of investigative journalism stories about events taking place at sea which are normally underreported or unknown because of the borderless setting of the oceans. It covers over-fishing to forced labour and human trafficking
@SarahHodges1 It's a collection of investigative journalism stories about events taking place at sea which are normally underreported or unknown because of the borderless setting of the oceans. It covers everything from over-fishing to forced labour and human trafficking
Sharing some History SoW

How to make the diamond industry more accountable for conflict diamonds?
Students mapped the supply chain of diamonds from a mine in the DRC to Tiffany & Co on Bond St.
They then analysed a Time Magazine article describing impacts and alternative consumer choices available
@fiona_616 Thanks! I use to map to highlight the limitations of the Kimberly process in reducing conflict diamonds reaching the market.
I have just popped them on to my Google Drive - here's the link:

The Almighty Dollar 💵
Analysing quotes from the India chapter explaining how poor infrastructure is hindering the country's development.
Students Identified the problem, suggested how it was limiting development and suggested a solution. Full spectrum thinking taking place!
As part of the conflicts SoW, students looked at the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
Firstly, they identified the causes and consequences of the disappearance and then went on to evaluate the possible solutions to reviving the Aral Sea.
