The branches did not imprison her. They undid her slowly, with the exquisite patience of time itself. Flesh surrendered first, then memory, then the names of ordinary things. What remained possessed the grave beauty of elegant decay.

They laid out the red carpet for us. The lobby smelled of beeswax, cigarillos and heady perfume. The kind of place where everyone had an alibi before the first shot was fired. Somewhere between the evasions and the practiced looks of innocence, we became the book everyone feared.

Every image
held its outermost
Paths
joined in the night
There,
my insomnia
found
its first shore
Her shadow
crossed my thoughts
like moonlight
finding water
The pure sister,
blossom
of all things
Poetry,
the limitless #rose#vss365#poetry#art by Phyllis
worn smooth
by all our words
drawn close
to the darkest longings
& thinned
amid passing bodies
has Love relinquished
its innocence
and its delight?
even so
it returns
stirred
by desire's nearness
& clothed
in the colors of life
as our oldest #defiance
against all
that disappears

The last time my grandmother brushed my hair, she tucked a cobalt-blue flower behind my ear.
"It's frozen starlight. You'll understand one day," she said.
After they buried her, I touched it.
It was colder than my tears. By dawn, blue had spread.

There will be
a new line
where the hills
release the morning
mist
leaving the valley
water
lifting the face of a stone
a hush
ripening
into swallows' calls
We will gather
the leaf
at the hour
it chooses light
and walk
beside those
whose breath
keeps the fire alive
#tenderly
until the earth
answers
with another bloom

The days gathered into years almost without her noticing. Her face remembered their passing more faithfully than she did. Every morning, the same smile returned, carrying the #swoon of a love that had remained beyond familiarity. It astonished her no less than it had the first time. Time, in the end, learned to live around what it could not diminish.

Those who waited
eventually stopped
We arrived with flowers
apologies
& words meant
for another season
Time can be #supercilious
forever convinced
tomorrow will be enough
But each morning
knows better
It returns without promises
asking only that we knock
on the doors still open
& love those
still there to answer

It was beneath the equator
where the day slipped
into the sea
Its burning wheels
turning more slowly
until they disappeared
Night followed
along the last ribbon of fire
The heavens yielding
their last color
The moon appeared
#stunning
taking up
where the sunset
left off
We entered
each other's orbit
Undivided
