Enormous congratulations to the icon @kylieminogue on securing this year’s @officialcharts Christmas Number One with XMAS! Well done Kylie; the first female artist to boast UK Number 1 singles across four different decades -the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2020s. Wow! Hugely proud!
well done Kylie! a top 20 single AND a number one album at the age of 57! almost unheard of for an artist who’s been around for nearly 40 years still killing it! what an incredible few years for her! 🥺🥰
The BMA have to take responsibility for the pain they are causing patients.
I’ve given them a 28.9% pay rise, and offered more jobs, career progression, and help with expenses.
Have the courage to put the offer to your members, @BMAResidents.
As well as sending thoughts and prayers to those affected, we need to address the issue at large - rampant antisemitism running riot in our country, often excused or ignored.
Each event I do, worried grandparents tell me the fears for their families’ futures in UK.
Enough.
Reform’s call to deport ALL people who legally make a life here - paying taxes, forming families, volunteering and even being elected - needs calling out.
Contrary to Farage, ILR doesn’t = criminal. They ARE net contributors to our economy.
An expensive, hateful & stupid plan.
We may be in an era of five party politics. But there’s only really two sides.
Our side: a politics of love, compassion and community. With the ideas to transform Britain.
And their side: a politics of anger, division and blame. Posing only a risk to Britain.
So I say to the populist right: bring it on.
Great to close @progbrit conference yesterday. #PBC25
Thoughts from the US
"In my life, I have watched John Kennedy talk on television about missiles in Cuba. I saw Lyndon Johnson look Richard Russell squarely in the eye and and say, "And we shall overcome." I saw Richard Nixon resign and Gerald Ford tell the Congress that our long national nightmare was over. I saw Jimmy Carter talk about malaise and Ronald Reagan talk about a shining city on a hill. I saw George H.W. Bush deliver the eulogy for the Soviet bloc, and Bill Clinton comfort the survivors of Timothy McVeigh's madness in Oklahoma City. I saw George W. Bush struggle to make sense of it all on September 11, 2001, and I saw Barack Obama sing 'Amazing Grace' in the wounded sanctuary of Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
"These were the presidents of my lifetime. These were not perfect men. They were not perfect presidents, god knows. Not one of them was that. But they approached the job, and they took to the podium, with all the gravitas they could muster as appropriate to the job. They tried, at least, to reach for something in the presidency that was beyond their grasp as ordinary human beings. They were not all ennobled by the attempt, but they tried nonetheless.
"And comes now this hopeless, vicious buffoon, and the audience of equally hopeless and vicious buffoons who laughed and cheered when he made sport of a woman whose lasting memory of the trauma she suffered is the laughter of the perpetrators. Now he comes, a man swathed in scandal, with no interest beyond what he can put in his pocket and what he can put over on a universe of suckers, and he does something like this while occupying an office that we gave him, and while endowed with a public trust that he dishonors every day he wakes up in the White House.
"The scion of a multigenerational criminal enterprise, the parameters of which we are only now beginning to comprehend. A vessel for all the worst elements of the American condition. And a cheap, soulless bully besides. We never have had such a cheap counterfeit of a president* as currently occupies the office. We never have had a president* so completely deserving of scorn and yet so small in the office that it almost seems a waste of time and energy to summon up the requisite contempt.
"Watch how a republic dies in the empty eyes of an empty man who feels nothing but his own imaginary greatness, and who cannot find in himself the decency simply to shut up even when it is in his best interest to do so. Presidents don't have to be heroes to be good presidents. They just have to realize that their humanity is our common humanity, and that their political commonwealth is our political commonwealth, too.
Watch him behind the seal of the President of the United States. Isn't he a funny man? Isn't what happened to that lady hilarious? Watch the assembled morons cheer. This is the only story now."
- Charles Pierce
Was it for this that the US spent 80 years building power and alliances? Not to be a force for good. But instead to impoverish neighbours, threaten those it protected, rob minerals from war-torn countries, and break its promises to 100s of millions of the poorest in the world? 🧵
There is an aggressor: Russia.
There is a victim: Ukraine.
We were right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago—and to keep doing so.
By “we,” I mean the Americans, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese, and many others.
Thank you to all who have helped and continue to do so. And respect to those who have been fighting since the beginning—because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, their children, and the security of Europe.
I thought this country was built by
Europeans, escaping living under the rule of a King, to establish a New World governed by the people.
Currently we have a president who calls Himself.
Our King
If this is a joke,
I'm not laughing
It blows my mind how we seemingly have so many in this country fighting for farmers with land worth £3m or more. But they don’t give a shit about the millions of kids going to school hungry every morning. What sort of backwards bullshit is this?
You have to be richer than almost everyone in the country to ever pay inheritance tax. Even if you own a farm. And if you do own a farm, and are rich enough to pay inheritance tax on it, you still get a massive discount. Why are we giving this protest airtime?
The appointment of RF Kennedy Jnr as US Health Secretary to pursue an anti-vaccine agenda is a new low. A total repudiation of the Enlightenment values on which the US republic is founded. For all of us who admire the US this is a crisis moment. Instead Britain must fly the flag for science and public health.
