Hard working positional beats lazy relational 🤔

Through UEFA Elite Youth A, I’m exploring dynamic superiorities: how players and teams in possession can affect the opponent’s position, orientation and balance.

E.g. how a disguised pass sends the "wrong" information to the opponent.

[Daniel Abrahams @DanAbrahams77]

Every second on the pitch there is a cycle of three mental skills constantly mediating the execution of actions…

Every second…

These three mental skills constantly mediate technical, tactical, and physical actions…and they can be seen within technical, tactical, and physical actions.

Watch the video below. Anthony Gordon to Harry Kane. Goal!

Anthony Gordon - attention, intensity, intent…

-attention: focused and connected to the game
-intensity: alert and ready
-intent: purposeful, positive, proactive with actions

Harry Kane - attention, intensity, intent…

-attention: focused and connected to the game
-intensity: alert and ready
-intent: purposeful, positive, proactive with actions

Throw in a little anxiety - distracting and disconnecting…damaging alertness and readiness…generating a touch of inhibition and hesitation - perhaps the ball doesn’t get to Kane; and perhaps he doesn’t score.

A pinch of anxiety
A little bit of complacency
A tiny bit of frustration
A modicum of despondency

Psychological, emotional, and physiological states that atrophy attention, intensity, and intent.

And so…
And so…

Players need to know what their High Performance Mindset (HPM) is. They need to know how to start there and stay there. They need to retain their HPM for 100 minutes no matter what. No matter what! No matter what!

Only then can they discover just how good a game they can have. And only then can they discover just how good a player they can be…

Detail. Detail. Detail.

No detail is a “small detail”.

Detail is simply detail.

Throwback here to a discussion between two midfield greats in Xabi Alonso and Pep Guardiola.

They are discussing midfield positioning to support play from behind ball.

That positioning allows a central midfielder to:

1. Receive on the move
2. Receive with an open body shape
3. Create distance between themselves and the opposition player
4. Move into space beyond if the opposition player follows in touch tight

With a closed receiving position, all of these things become much more difficult.

1. The midfielder is easier to press.

2. The first touch becomes more predictable.

3. The body shape limits the next action.

4. The opposition player can get tighter.

5. The space disappears quicker.

This is why the detail matters. Not just receiving the ball. It's where you receive it. How you receive it. What your body shape allows you to see or do. What your movement does to the opposition player.

Save this and follow us to get more.

Players take note!

Jose- “the player had amazing quality BUT physically is not very good… then he’s not a good player!”

Don’t overhype just stay humble and keep improving

But I think what is quite clear to see is that England lack true qualitative superiority in certain positions for example out wide despite Rashford and Saka having talent and on their day can be brilliant compared to some of the top wide players in the world right? Not the same!

[The Sokkr Coach - In The Technical Box @Inthetechnical1]

Trying to judge the last two England performances based on the game situation and opponent. For example people talking about the defence in the first half, simply against better teams we won’t be that open, doesn’t mean we will be solid still but it would be a different game plan

[The Sokkr Coach - In The Technical Box @Inthetechnical1]

Not sure the purpose of Kane dropping deep in this game? Teams are catching onto it and stop following him which means he’s just another body running at the ball leaving a vacated striker position with the occasional run from midfield or from out wide.

@C0ACHFR4N Strong footed winger on strong side. #sane #wingers

[The Sokkr Coach - In The Technical Box @Inthetechnical1]

Genuinely what is the obsession with left footed wingers on the right and right footed wingers off the left when against a low block?
Surely one way to beat the block is simplify wide areas by going down the line and crossing the ball and reacting to 1st/2nd phase? #worldcup

[The Sokkr Coach - In The Technical Box @Inthetechnical1]

@C0ACHFR4N Just super frustrating! I always think back to Leroy Sane’s early days under Pep who actually played him on the left and his job was to be direct.
Not seen many examples since I can think of? 🤔

As a coach should be simple to teach with a CAM/FB making underlapping runs!

On the tactics board, that passing line is blocked.
Go back, circulate, generate numerical/positional advantages.
