The translation of a basic conversation about his day was adequate, except for the part where it kept making up answers about its own day instead of interpreting. But reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. (3/3)
In a 30-second demo, using concrete, unambiguous language in a quiet environment with intentionally clear speech, ChatGPT is very good at consecutive interpretation. I've been hearing "RIP translators" for 25 years and we're doing better than ever, thanks.
My son and I tried a similar experiment using ChatGPT. It took three tries to get it to understand what I wanted it to do, and even then, it kept replying to the speaker instead of interpreting and it misheard several times even in a quiet room. (2/)
El mensaje viene muy tarde, pero una triste y respetuosa despedida para Policarpo Chaj, excelente intérprete k'iche'<>español con quien muchas veces tuve el honor de interpretar en relevo. QEPD.
This comes far too late, but a sad and respectful farewell to Policarpo Chaj, an outstanding K'iche'<>Spanish interpreter with whom I had the honor of doing relay interpreting many times. RIP
It's time for @NAJITOrg 's annual meeting! So excited to hear @lynneguist speak on the differences between British/American English (a subject near and dear to my heart as an American language nerd married to a Brit).
3. When I said that, DS8 spontaneously exclaimed "Twickle!" So now I'm going to call it a "twickle" forevermore, and I encourage you all to do the same. 6/6
This photo is not only hilarious, but also linguistically important for a few reasons. For context, it was hung in a restroom to alert people that you have to flush the toilet by moving the thingamajig *upwards*. 1/
@bitsybee17 New Jersey abolished cash bail in 2017. 🙂 It's going as expected, ie rates of non-appearance and of crime while on release are the same as under a cash bail system.
2. Who memorizes their power company account number? No one! So I could look it up... either with a flashlight in a filing cabinet in my office, or on your fancy website that I still can't load.
Hey @PSEGNews, if there's no power, your customers are trying to conserve their cell batteries. How about giving your outages page fewer bells and whistles? Like not requiring the phone's GPS?
Also, I shouldn't need my account number to report an outage. 1. What if I was a house sitter? What if electricity were included in my rent so the bill was in my landlord's name?
