They stand on the stage with a grin and a wink,
Promise two Christmases, maybe even three,
Extra tinsel, extra turkey, extra drink,
A bonus birthday just for you and me.
We cheer like children who still trust the list,
Then wake on the 25th to an empty fist.

The calendar used to have one circled day,
Red ink, bright hope, a national embrace;
They cross it out quietly, shrug, walk away,
“Budget constraints,” they say with a straight face.
No stockings, no snow, just a polite little note:
“Sorry, we spent your Christmas on a new private boat.”

So raise a glass to the public masters’ art,
Masters of promising what they’ll never bring;
They gift us tomorrow while stealing today’s heart,
And somehow convince us to vote for the sting.
Next election they’ll swear it’s two Easters this time,
We’ll queue up again for the same old victimless crime.
