Couldn’t agree more with my colleague and chair of the Corrections committee in the Senate.
I will ALSO say that Oppression Tourism is a real thing and I’m suspect of legislators who’ve never demonstrated real interest in these issues before moving to the front of the line.

Before the pandemic, predatory prison telecom Securus was struggling thanks to advocacy. But the pandemic gave it the gift it needed to recover: the end of visits.
We got our hands on Securus' 2020 financials, here's a summary of our analysis. THREAD

Imagine sitting in a prison law library dreaming of becoming a lawyer someday, believing it to be impossible. That was me then. This article describes me now. @CUNYLaw@glennEmartin (closest to the problem, closest to the solution)

“The time is now to save lives!” says NY Senator @JabariBrisport. He’s calling for passage of the Fair & Timely Parole and Elder Parole bills this session. Three days left….

NY's highest court has turned a blind eye toward the rights of people charged with crime. It is Cuomo’s court -- he appointed every single member -- and if he will not fix it then the NYS Senate must deny confirmation to his nominees until he does.
The United Nations says solitary confinement beyond 15 days is torture, but incarcerated New Yorkers are regularly locked in solitary for months, years—even decades. New York must #HALTsolitary and end this torture. TAKE ACTION NOW: https://t.co/4GWBFP6qO4
Each day >5k people are incarcerated across NYS on #parole violations. It drives #MassIncarceration, exacerbates racial inequity, & costs $$$. Our expert panel discusses origins and reform. Register: https://t.co/iDGwHJgETQ Take action: https://t.co/5emlqIvl5Y #LessIsMoreNY
I agree. I’ve been saying this all along. We have ATI on one end and Reentry stuff at the other end. ATI/Reentry is good, but there are real lives in the system right now between those two extremes that need help too.
📢ACTION ALTERT📢 Over a dozen legislators have visited constituents behind bars at jails, prisons and ICE detention.

@jamaaltbailey Senator Montgomery is a force for good in this world, and she is probably the most known Senator among incarcerated people in NY. She always fought for positive change. Even if a bill didn’t pass, she still inspired hope in all the people who believed in her. She will be missed.
@RailroadUnderg1 I know the feeling. I got 5 years in solitary because I had a cell phone. I got out of solitary after 3 years, but that was the price to pay for wanting to contact my family. It was the only way I was able to speak to my grandmother before she died. #HALTSolitary
I can’t wait until some second chance laws get passed to allow judges to shorten sentences years later. Getting a commutation from @NYGovCuomo seems less likely than winning the lottery. I gave up after my second denial. Deserving friends of mine also get denied every year.
I am SO HAPPY for Arnie and the other 6 who received sentence commutations today. I truly am.
I am also ENRAGED that my AMAZING, INCREDIBLE, OVER-DESERVING brother was not on the list.
And I’m SO ANGRY that this process even exists. NO ONE should be caged!
Let them F🤬ING GO!
“It makes me angry because in the wealthiest city in the world, it’s inexcusable to have such a high rate of unemployment in one area,” Mr. Sepúlveda said.

I’m at the end of my 1st semester as a 1L at @CUNYLaw, studying like crazy for final exams that are more rigorous than any exam I’ve ever taken. I have a new respect for everyone who has gone through this process. It’s crazy. #lawschoolfinals#riseup#persistence#socialjustice
Some of y’all talk so tough on this app but have never talked to a tenant facing eviction or a family that just lost their child to gun violence. Stop letting these “likes” gas you. People are hurting. Do work.
Day 1 of the legislative session: Repeal the Walking While Trans Ban & HALT Solitary Confinement. Both already have majority support in both houses of the legislature.
