@tangotiger@enLIGHTONment Is that the "spirit of the rule"? If a runner at 1st jogs into RF and spins in circles are we to say "that's ok, he can make his own base path?"
@vocal_socialist@EricBuckne58359@afkostka A curve that connects bases is a valid path. A line that takes the runner past a base without touching it is invalid. Common sense!
@beisbolrulez@GlennClarkRadio A base path requires the base to figure into the path. A runner who misses the base or must make a desperate attempt to reach the base fails to run a proper path.
@tangotiger Proper "path" is the line that takes the runner to the base, not parallel to the base! The line parallel to the base is not a valid base path for it fails to get the runner to the base.
@tangotiger Clement ends up a good 10 feet away from 2B and has to crawl to reach the base. This informs me he is well outside the base path. He veered so much to avoid being tagged he was not in position to touch the base!
@beisbolrulez@GlennClarkRadio Just use common sense. Clement ended up so far out of line with 2B he had to crawl to reach it - he was a good 10+ feet away from the base! How did he end up so far off base? He ran out of the base path!
@heylmAdam@GlennClarkRadio What Clement did was change his base part to avoid being tagged out. If he had not done so he runs directly into the fielder who tags him out.
@vocal_socialist@EricBuckne58359@afkostka This is the silliness of the MLB rule. It allows a runner to be unbounded in his running, as if that is the runner's prerogative. Why? The bases have fixed locations and it is clear at any moment what path gets the runner to a base quickest.
@blisteringfx@Frost011001@afkostka Neither of those options yields a double play, which GH was hoping for. To me the play simply illustrates the MLB base running rules are flawed. Clement veered 8 - 10 feet to avoid being tagged and got away with it!
@Frost011001@afkostka The flaw in the MLB rule is it grants runners a privilege they don't need. Base path deviations make sense for rounding bases. They shouldn't allow a runner to avoid running into an out.
@ryanripkenshow MLB base running rules invite confusion. Clement clearly changed his path to avoid being tagged out. We have runners deviating away from 2B to interfere with the defense. MLB should fix this but for some reason they do nothing.
@monkey_peter@Spudislander55@afkostka Clement is running a direct line to 2B. He sees Henderson field the ball and realizes he is going to run directly into a tag. So Clement runs 10 feet out of his path to avoid the out. Textbook running out of the basepath.
@GlennClarkRadio 100% agree. We have runners at 1b running into the infield grass to intentionally create interference and the umps allow it. Running out of the basepath is simple to judge yet umps fail at it again and again.
