@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements No coaches, athletes, and pole vault officials were consulted for possible remedies. An arbitrary decision was made that will now be a lifelong hurt. The competition is not over, but it ended in a way that disrespects the work each of these girls and their coaches put in.
@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements 5. 2a vault was jumping at 1 am last year. Saturday was done at 11pm. I would have waited as long as it took to give these girls their shot. It's what we have worked towards for 3 years. It was taken from us. It is inexcusable.
@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements 3. Of course it is a safety issue, but every other event was given time to resume in safe conditions.
4. Three girls don't need 30 minutes to get ready. They could have warmed up and fit in with the girls in 1a or 4a and it wouldn't have added more than 10 total minutes.
@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements 2. My girl cleared 11'10 in practice the week of states, the week of regionals practice, and at IMG during the week before Regionals. One of the other girls had a PR of 12' coming into the meet.
@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements My responses to that are:
1. Only the girls 3a vault was deprived of the opportunity to take all of their attempts. Every event in every other class was given their full number of trials, lightning or rain delay.
@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements 1. It was equitable because they each had 2 attempts.
2. None of the girls cleared 11'10 the previous week
3. It is a safety issue.
4. They don't have time to do a 30 minute warmup for 3 girls to each take 1 jump.
5. They had to fit most of 3A in with 1a and 4a on Saturday
@PMOWriter@Ron_Clements I am Leah's pole vault coach. When we returned to the field Saturday I spoke with Ed Thompson, the head of track and field for FHSAA at the meet and told him I wanted to protest the decision. I told him that it was unfair and not equitable. His excuses follow:
After a rain soaked and lightning delayed state track meet, we protested the decision, and I echoed her sentiment and pleaded for one more jump. The rain could not disguise the tears.
@FHSAA#fhsaatrackfield Supremely disappointed with the FHSAA’s decision to end the 3A girls pole vault with 3 girls remaining, each with one jump left. In doing so they robbed each of them of the opportunity to finish the event.
Those moments of pleading in the hope that the hours of training, the sacrifice, and the commitment could come together into better form, a bigger pole, or a higher bar.
