We say "stewardship" a lot.

But stewardship isn’t planting a tree.

It’s watering it months later.
It’s checking it.
It’s replanting when it fails.
It’s choosing to stay.

Lasting change is consistency. That’s true for trees and for children.

Stewardship = long-term care.

Every child will inherit a climate-changed world.

Many development projects are measured in months.

Trees are measured in years.

Some of the most important outcomes of stewardship will only become visible long after a project cycle ends.

That is precisely why they matter.

We plant different tree species because not all trees serve the same purpose.

Some contribute to household nutrition through fruit production. Others provide shade, improve soil conditions, support biodiversity or strengthen climate resilience.

A child struggling to stay in school is often living inside the same conditions created by environmental stress: degraded land, declining farm productivity, water insecurity, economic pressure etc etc, at household level.

Behind every steward is usually a caregiver providing encouragement, land, water, protection, or guidance, because climate resilience is rarely built by children alone.

Stewardship becomes stronger when households participate.

Not all climate action happens in conference rooms or large campaigns.

Sometimes it looks like a seedling in rural soil.
And sometimes, people quietly choosing to care for it consistently.

This is what we do.

We recently carried out assessments in our program households in Nyandarua and Nakuru counties.

We are loving the progress both in the fruit and indigenous trees, and most importantly the children taking care of them!

One thing we are learning is that real change comes from routine, consistency and most importantly shared responsibility.

When children are involved early and caregivers are part of the process, ideas begin to turn into habits.

Then, #sustainability starts.

Our children are the future caregivers & leaders of our communities. But that future can only grow where children are protected now.

Please stay alert. Know where your children are. Keep close communication with schools and neighbours. A child’s #safety is never a small matter.

What helps children thrive most in your community? Is it support at home, support at school, or both?

For us, the answer is often both. Children do better when the support around them is connected, consistent and practical.

Last week, we carried out our termly assessments with the stewards in our program schools and homesteads in Nyandarua and Nakuru counties.

It was encouraging to see clear progress both in the trees and in the children caring for them.

Over the next few months, we are hopeful to see even more visible milestones, especially as some of the fruit trees move closer toward fruition.

Yes, growth takes time. But when children grow alongside the trees they care for, the impact reaches far beyond the environment.
