Ukraine cannot win this war. They have to constantly give ground. Leaving units behind to be encircled slows down Russian advances, because they can harass the troops, even if all of them are eventually killed

Ukraine's position is very akin to that of Nazi Germany after Barbarossa failed. Hitler's generals, especially Manstein, wanted to fight an elastic defense, while he himself forbade retreats, even when units were encircled. However, if Manstein's plans were followed, the Soviets would have reached Berlin much faster than they did in real life, even if it would have led to fewer German losses

If you keep giving ground while retreating to prevent loses, you survive tactically but lose strategically
