At 22 years old, Dillon Fillion is part of a generation that came of age during some of the most politically and culturally turbulent years in recent memory. Now, he’s running to represent Iowa House District 81.

Dillon grew up with dreams of playing hockey — not entering politics. But as a teenager, he began paying attention to what was happening in the country. Then COVID hit. Schools closed, masks became part of everyday life, and his own family was separated by the Canadian border. What started as curiosity became a conviction that he couldn’t simply "sit back and watch".

In this conversation, Dillon shares how his upbringing, years in competitive hockey, faith, and the lessons of discipline and perseverance shaped the way he approaches politics today. We talk about the challenges facing his generation, the cost of living, limited government, political division, knocking doors in a swing district, and why he believes conversations with people who disagree with you still matter.

Barb Clayton didn’t set out to become one of the most informed and influential grassroots voices in Dickinson County. She simply realized that watching what was happening in Washington wasn’t enough—if she wanted to protect liberty, she needed to start paying attention to what was happening at home. So Barb showed up to a county supervisors meeting. At first, she was often the only citizen in the room. But she kept coming back. She asked questions, learned how her county actually worked, paid attention to who was making decisions, and encouraged others to do the same. What began with a fight over a mask policy grew into battles over wind turbines, property rights, the CO2 pipeline, taxes, and ultimately who would represent the people of Dickinson County.

Then Barb did something about it. Drawing on nearly two decades of experience as an executive recruiter, she began finding good people willing to serve, building teams around them, raising money, knocking doors, and helping ordinary citizens understand that local government belongs to them. What started with one woman showing up eventually helped produce five new county supervisors and a new county attorney. Barb likes to say that if you want to flip your county, you have to “grab it by the corner and shake it.” Her story is proof that you actually can.

This conversation is about much more than Iowa politics. It’s about rediscovering the power and responsibility we already have to know our communities, protect our neighbors, defend property rights, practice good government, and faithfully steward the place God has given us.

You don’t have to start in Washington. You can start by showing up.
