Prime Minister @andyburnham and Foreign Secretary @Ed_Miliband : how much longer will Britain remain silent?

For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir,  which according to the UN,  amounts to torture and which  is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health. 

He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.

The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.

He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.

Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive  medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.

Yet those orders are being defied.

This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.

He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and  include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.

His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls. 

I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not  intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father. 

@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court;  restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.

Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government  to please now do the right thing.

خان صاحب کو دور سے دیکھ کر واپس چلا گیا تھا
وہ چاہتا تو خان صاحب سے ملاقات کر سکتا تھا
اس گوہر کو بہت موقعے ملے خان صاحب سے ملاقات کے لئے لیکن اس بندے نے خان صاحب سے ملاقات نہیں کی۔۔۔۔
یہ چاہتا تو خان صاحب کی صحت پر سچ بتا کر خان صاحب کی آنکھ کو بچانے کے لئے کچھ کر سکتا تھا لیکن یہ چپ رہا، بلکے قیادت میں کافی لوگوں کو معلوم تھا کہ خان صاحب کی آنکھ میں تکلیف بہت زیادہ ہے لیکن سب کے سب خاموش رہے
میں نے گرفتاری سے پہلے ٹویٹس میں بتایا تھا کہ قیادت کو خان صاحب کی صحت کے حوالے سے سب معلوم تھا۔۔۔۔۔
میری بات کو نظر انداز کیا گیا
میں آج بھی اپنے ایک ایک دعوے اور ایک ایک بات پر قائم ہوں۔۔۔۔۔
میرے دعوے سچے ہیں اس لیے تو قیادت میرے سوالات سے بھاگتی ہے۔۔۔۔۔

It has now been around 1,100 days since my father, Imran Khan, was imprisoned, and my brother and I haven’t heard his voice since March. For months, we’ve been denied contact with him. We remain in the dark about his access to healthcare as his eyesight continues to deteriorate. He urgently needs medical attention, and with no family or legal access, we don’t even get any second hand information or reassurance.

I’ve found myself especially missing him recently. I want to speak to him about mundane things like my cricket, books I’ve been reading and what new movies are good. I understand the people of Pakistan want their chosen leader free, but I miss my father more than ever.

But this is not just about a father. It is about Pakistan, and its future. A rigged, authoritarian regime continues to crush political opposition, undermine democratic institutions, and deny millions of Pakistanis their right to freely choose their leaders, whilst terrorising those who speak their beliefs.

I once again plea to the international community to not look away. Silence in the face of injustice only enables it.

ہمارا آپ سے ایک اہم سوال ہے۔ اطلاعات کے مطابق ضلع خیبر میں آپ کے بھائی نوید آفریدی مختلف ترقیاتی منصوبوں کی افتتاحی تقریبات میں شرکت کر رہے ہیں
اور ایسے منصوبوں سے خود کو منسلک کر رہے ہیں جن کا تعلق منتخب عوامی نمائندے، ایم پی اے عبدالغنی آفریدی، سے بتایا جا رہا ہے۔

اگر یہ اطلاعات درست ہیں تو یہ سوال پیدا ہوتا ہے کہ کیا ایک غیر منتخب فرد کا منتخب عوامی نمائندے کے ترقیاتی منصوبوں میں اس انداز سے کردار ادا کرنا عوامی مینڈیٹ کے احترام کے مطابق ہے؟

جمہوری نظام میں ہر منتخب نمائندے کے آئینی اور عوامی مینڈیٹ کا احترام کیا جانا چاہیے۔
اس لیے گزارش ہے کہ اگر کسی قسم کی سیاسی مداخلت ہو رہی ہے تو اسے روکا جائے اور تمام منتخب نمائندوں کے اختیارات اور مینڈیٹ کا مکمل احترام یقینی بنایا جائے۔

ہم امید کرتے ہیں کہ آپ اس معاملے کا نوٹس لیں گے اور اس بات کو یقینی بنائیں گے کہ آئندہ کسی بھی غیر منتخب فرد کی جانب سے ایسے اقدامات نہ ہوں جو سیاسی تنازع یا منتخب نمائندوں کے مینڈیٹ کے بارے میں سوالات کو جنم دیں۔
