Three global 6.9+ magnitude earthquakes on the same day is a statistical anomaly, to say the least.
“Doublets” do happen more often in their own right, though their occurrence interval depends heavily on the magnitude.
The extremely short duration between today's quakes in Venezuela makes it incredibly rare.
Major “doublet” quakes separated by under a minute recently:
June 24, 2026: Venezuela (7.2 and 7.5, separated by ~40 seconds)
February 27, 1997: Pakistan (7.0 and 6.8, separated by 19 seconds)
The last times we had 3 massive quakes on Earth in the same day like this:
🇳🇿 March 4, 2021: New Zealand / Kermadec Islands (7.3, 7.4, 8.1)
🇯🇵 March 11, 2011: Japan / Tohoku (9.1, 7.9, 7.7)
Today's Venezuelan “doublet” featured a 7.2 and 7.5 separated by ~40 seconds — coupled with the entirely unrelated 6.9 magnitude off the coast of Honshu, Japan.
The quakes are on entirely different sides of the world and tectonic plates.
Seismologists would call today’s Venezuelan earthquakes a “complex rupture” (with the 7.2 essentially acting as an immediate preshock that triggered the larger 7.5). It was also somewhat shallow, which allowed intense energy to heavily rock Caracas, despite the capital being 100+ miles from the epicenter.

To those who wonder about what’s going on in Venezuela, you should understand President Trump is deadly serious about stopping the narcoterrorist state of Venezuela from continuing to poison Americans with illegal drugs. President Trump also believes Maduro is an illegitimate leader whose days are numbered. I agree with President Trump’s assessment of the situation in Venezuela. I do not consider Maduro a legitimate leader but rather, a drug trafficker who has been indicted in U.S. courts.
Bush 41 took Panamanian leader Noriega down under similar circumstances. There is a drug caliphate in our backyard that includes Venezuela, Colombia and Cuba. I am very glad President Trump is dedicated to ending this reign of terror. The sooner Maduro leaves, the better for the people of Venezuela and the United States.
