Led by National Chair Catherine Shiyenji, the Midwives Association of Kenya delegation is participating in the historic Big Conversation at the ICM Congress 2026, joining global leaders to shape the future of maternal and newborn health worldwide.
Today marked the opening of the SONAM EA Faculty & Staff Workshop, bringing together colleagues from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania for three days of reflection, collaboration, and planning as we review progress, refine priorities, and strengthen our collective impact.
We were honoured to have Aga Khan University Provost, Prof. Tania Bubela open the workshop and set the tone for a productive and impactful few days ahead.
When Dr. O’Brien Kyololo watched nurses struggle to insert a cannula into his newborn as the baby cried until he had no tears left, he knew things had to change.
That painful moment became the turning point.
Today, his research @akusonamea is transforming how healthcare providers across Sub-Saharan Africa understand, assess, and manage pain in babies and children. Because babies do feel pain. And we must do better.

The reality is clear: too few midwives are carrying too heavy a load. When midwives are stretched, care is compromised. Investing in more midwives is not a future goal, it is an immediate necessity.

As we mark International Day of the Midwife, we are reminded that a safer, more compassionate future for mothers and newborns starts with investing in midwifery-led care. #IDM2026#OneMillionMoreMidwives
Behind every milestone at SONAM are the people who show up, put in the work, and keep everything moving. This Labour Day, we celebrate the dedication, resilience, and impact of every worker who makes it all possible.
At @akusonamea we are strengthening clinical education through our preceptorship workshops.
