🌳📈 Will future pulpwood markets stay strong post-Storm Éowyn? 🌪️🌲
Pulpwood fuels 🪵 wood-based panels (WBP) & 🔥 biomass energy — are still strong, but WBP relies on 🌍 90% exports, making it a fluctuating market. 📉📈

🌱 IrBEA recently hosted a information seminar at @killasheehotel on #biomass for industrial heat #decarbonisation
🔥 Topics: supply, sustainability, certification & innovation.
🌍 Interest is soaring with 🇮🇪’s new roadmap!
🙏 Thanks to SEAI, sponsors & speakers.

🌲 How can we increase homegrown #timber in the domestic market?
🏠 We need to boost timber frame homes from
40% ➡️ 80%, similar to Scotland.
🌳 Increasing homegrown timber use in these homes is key - it's being tackled by the govt's 'Timber in Construction Steering Group'.
This week....

🌲 Will timber construction stay strong post-Storm Éowyn?
📈 Main markets look solid.
🇮🇪 Ireland alone needs ➕50,000 homes/year, aiming for 60,000 by 2030 ➕
🏡 Timber set to play a key role in meeting housing demand.

🌪️🌲 Will the volume of timber blown by Storm Éowyn reduce future log supply?
📊 Estimated at 10 million m³, that’s 2 years’ harvest from an annual standing volume of 145 million m³ 🌍
🌱 Ireland needs a viable afforestation programmes to secure long-term supply. 🌳🪵
🌲 What’s the ideal forest size?
Depends on expectations:
🔹 Up to 10ha – Great for alternative farm income €800/ha/year from commercial forestry premiums & log sales.
🔹 15ha+ More viable🌿 35% must include broadleaves & unplanted biodiversity areas.
#Forestry#GreenInvestment
🌲 Most emphasis is now on clearing windblown #forests but for those of us thinking of planting, how does forestry compare with other farming enterprises?
📊 Teagasc surveys show that forestry on good marginal land provides a higher income than sheep & beef suckler #enterprises.
A great line up of speakers for this evening's webinar with input from DAFM, Coillte, the IWP and NRW.

🌲💨 Will felling licences be scrapped for windblown forests?
❌ No (for now) – but this may be revised.
📜✅ In the meantime, apply for felling & road licences ASAP! The Minister says they’ll be prioritised & issued quickly.
#Forestry#StormRecovery
🌳 Storm Éowyn knocked down my forest.
📜 I have a thinning licence, but now they say I need a clearfell licence.
✅ Check with your local forestry advisor, but if you have a thinning licence, it can now be used as a clearfell licence.

"🌲💨Is my 30-year-old windblown spruce crop worthless after Storm Éowyn?
Not at all! Expect the same roadside timber price as a conventional clearfell—just factor in higher harvesting costs and some downgraded timber from shattered trees.
#StormRecovery#TimberValue#woodfuels
🌲💨 I've a windblown #forest and would appreciate advice. First advice: don’t panic sell!
The crop still has value, especially if trees are blown rather than shattered 🌳➡️🚛 roadside prices remain the same as standing timber, but harvesting costs will be higher.⚠️ 🪵
Damage to #forests by storms are largely out of our control, but we can minimise other threats to our forest. The Society of Irish Foresters & Forest Service are organising a field day in Glendalough forest on safeguarding our forests on 11 April.
Email [email protected] for details.
Storm Éowyn caused severe windblow to our forests.
Is the viability of forestry now in question?
The damage was major for sure with an estimated 23,652ha windblown but that's less than 3% of the national forest estate (808,848ha) we may need to change how we manage our forests.
It's #NationalTreeWeek. Take time to stop, view and appreciate the trees you have in your area. They provide wonderful habitats for wildlife, shade and shelter for people and animals, and are important for soil retention and maintenance.
