I moved to the NHS after my MD in India, about 20 years ago!
My oncall shifts in India were easily 36 hours long, I only went home the next evening!
We accepted this as the norm, sometimes even with pride, we knew nothing different!

Our world was not evolved enough to think doctor’s health or patient safety issues from an exhausted doctor and manpower was stretched! All we cared about was surviving the shift, clerking in all new admissions, and proving ourselves to our bosses! …dare I say we also had fun! Overwork was glorified!

Fast forward NHS UK - European Working Time Directive - mandating us to work no more than 48 hours a week and no longer than a 12 hour stretch a day!
And guess what, you could opt out ….. and guess who, most subscribed to the exemption? ….Asian doctors, Indians!

I’m glad this conversation is happening! I’m glad the juniors are questioning this!
Only, in an evolved society these questions would have come from the top!

Yes I get it, India is a different ball game! Unimaginable Manpower issues and patient loads unseen in the west….but we’ll have to find solutions that’s not “flogging the medic!”

@vcaspati6vc9 I agree, that's why I'm saying it's tricky. The objective should be to provide enough education to make sure that when she is an adult capable of making individual choices,she should be aware that wearing a hijab is oppressive regardless of what she chooses. Easier said than done

She is 100% right. It is definitely a patriarchal system that needs to be done away with, but this will also set back education for muslim children whose parents won't hesitate for even a single second before pulling them out from school.
