Baby elephant rescued from strong currents in eastern India

A newborn elephant calf was swept away in the Teesta River in West Bengal. Local fishermen rescued the calf, and it was later reunited with its mother

A 17-year-old girl and her friend had visited Kalkaji Temple in Delhi and subsequently entered Astha Kunj Park through Gate No. 7.

3 men approached them while posing as policemen, separated the girl from her friend, and took her to a secluded area of the park, where they gang-raped her.

One accused identified as Asif was injured in a police encounter and arrested. Two other accused are still absconding.

This is the situation in Delhi.

Why have the remaining accused not been arrested yet? What does this say about the state of law and order and the safety of women in the national capital of India?

Open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi from an Afghan citizen

Respected Prime Minister Modi ji, I write to you as an Afghan who has not forgotten India’s friendship.

India did not come to us with empty words. You built our Parliament in Kabul. You built the Salma Dam, the Afghan-India Friendship Dam. You built the Zaranj–Delaram road. You rebuilt the children’s hospital. You sent food, medicine, teachers, and scholarships. Indian workers stayed even when it was dangerous.

Afghans remember that. When we see India, we see a neighbour who tried to help us stand.

For decades Afghanistan was not allowed to stand. Every time a government tried to build the country, armed groups rose against it. Those groups were raised, sheltered, and used from across the border in Pakistan. That is why our governments collapsed again and again. That is why we could not build our own factories, our own planes, or our own defence like a normal country.

Pakistan’s military kept Afghanistan weak because a weak Afghanistan was useful to them. A strong Afghanistan was not.

This morning that wound opened again. Pakistani military jets struck a civilian house in Nurgal, Kunar. A family was hit. A child was among the dead. This was not the first time. Before this too, they attacked our civilians and killed hundreds of Afghans, including children. In the last few decades of war, hundreds of thousands of Afghans were killed or injured. That war was sponsored, directly or indirectly, from the same country.

They come at night because they know we have no air defence. Then they say they were hunting militants. The rubble says otherwise.

India chose another path. While others exported chaos, India built dams, hospitals, roads, and schools. You showed that a country can be strong and still be decent.

Prime Minister, Afghanistan is not asking India to fight our war.

We are asking India to help us protect our people.

Help Afghanistan with air defence and the means to stop these night attacks on our villages. Pakistan’s military has hurt Afghans for years, and it has also stood against India. Helping Afghanistan defend itself is not charity. It is common sense.

We do not want to attack anyone. We want our children to sleep without listening for jets. We want to farm, study, and live. We cannot do that if our sky is open.

India already helped us build a future. Now that future needs protection.

Afghanistan is not asking India to fight. We are asking India to help us defend our homes.

After we flagged the matter on social media, police has begun investigating a case in which a Hindu woman left her husband without obtaining divorce, the married a man under Muslim personal law, and the man is now trying to circumcise the child without consent or knowledge of the child’s biological father

Many such cases of child abuse and forced conversion emerge routinely

As I write this, I have at least three similar complaints

These cases go unchallenged because the child’s biological father lacks legal knowledge, resources or support

We have decided to take these cases up

One of the deepest ideals of Bharat’s civilizational tradition is the dignity of women.

In the Ramayana, Ram waged war to bring Sita back from Ravana’s captivity. In the Mahabharata, Draupadi stood humiliated before kings and elders while the entire court failed its conscience. That silence became one of the epic’s deepest moral wounds.

And yet, look at us today. Perhaps this is why the stereotypes about India hurt so much. We know the civilization we inherited spoke of dharma, dignity and restraint. But we cannot keep invoking that heritage while ignoring the brutal realities of the society we have built.

Civilization is not what we claim to inherit. It is what we choose to live by.
