We've had a very industrious intern trying to get a splash screen up on I2C/SPI displays earlier than by using U-Boot (which delays booting further) on CM0.
His first demo is very impressive, able to enable the display in two seconds, but it is very specific for the M5-Stack Cardputer Zero.
His next job is to see whether we can make this a little more generic for programaticly bit-bashing GPIO, I2C and SPI devices at boot time.
