@RayCMe@a_patel118#digitech296#thomas That's a good question! From a biological POV, less blue-light exposure from screens -> less circadian rhythm disruption & better sleep.
@RayCMe@archanak97#digitech296#thomas True, but unfortunately that's the reality of how organizations evaluate a pool of candidates. Social Media is a double- edged sword that has to be used carefully and with the short-term and long-term in mind.
@RayCMe@AdrianSoegijono#digitech296#thomas How about looking at SM's disruptive potential for edu in terms of a spectrum? How disruptive do you think SM has been w/ regards to edu on a scale of 1-10?
@RayCMe@AdrianSoegijono#digitech296#thomas I can relate :) I think that SM has definitely influenced how students think about edu, but with regards to fundamentally changing the way people learn on a large scale, SM hasn't done that yet. Maybe it will in the future, only time will tell.
@RayCMe@archanak97#digitech296#thomas The more people we can reach out to, the farther the spread of our expression will be (whether it's positive or negative). In this way, one must have awareness when expressing themselves on SM
#digitech296#thomas Huge thanks to @barrywellman and @lrainie for teaching us a new way to perceive the technology-enmeshed world around us. We're grateful for the concepts we learned from you that we can apply to our daily lives. My personal favorite: networked individualism!
@neelay_ni85#digitech296#thomas True! In reality, we do have to accept that technological determinism and agency are balanced in their prevalence. But that definitely doesn't stop us from controlling how we express ourselves, communicate, and exchange social capital.
@a_patel118#digitech296#thomas So true! Digital tech is quickly becoming a skillset and somewhat of an invisible fabric that keeps our lines of communication/expression consumption intact.
@a_patel118@barrywellman#digitech296#thomas True! I think that using SM for class has helped foster discussion. For learning new content, it seems difficult to use a social media platform that is not completely designated for education (if you consider something like Khan Academy or Udemy a social net)
@AdrianSoegijono#digitech296#thomas Well said! It'll be interesting how we apply technology to further complement human endeavors/industry. In addition, the convergence of the offline and online worlds is another interesting implication.
@RayCMe@AdrianSoegijono#digitech296#thomas The scale of the change created matters. As far as I know, social media has not yet disrupted the institution of education on a massive scale/fundamentally changed the way it operates.
#digitech296#thomas Digital tech has enormous disruptive potential. Digital platforms enable humans to exert agency and be themselves while maintaining ties with their networks. Such networked individualism has never been seen before at the micro-level.
#digitech296#thomas Social media does not have much disruptive potential for edu. Although there is a large audience of students on SM, SM culture is less serious/intense than the culture of edu, so it doesn't seem likely that SM culture would quickly change on a large scale.
#digitech296#thomas Privacy is definitely fading into obsolescence. As organizations and institutions become more rationalistic (McDonaldized), they increase their efficiency by quantifying customers/individuals into data, which is used by businesses, institutions, etc.
@neelay_ni85@barrywellman @digitech296 This would have such a positive impact on emergency services in developing countries. Drone crashes would pose sanitation issues though, but that's an issue that can be improved upon
@kajalpatel11798 @barrywellman#Digitech296 So true! AR will improve our abilities to model and understand our representations of reality across institutions (healthcare, education, design)
@paladino_noah @barrywellman#digitech296 definitely something to be concerned about, but hopefully the initiatives at institutions like West Virginia University to stomp out fake news with artificial intelligence are fruitful.
@JonDbusiness@barrywellman#Digitech296 the implications on medicine are certainly important, also cost is a big issue for those on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder. It would be great if an innovation like this is viable for such an application
