President Ruto: “I have declared a seven-day period of national mourning during which the national flag shall fly at half-mast across Kenya and in all our missions abroad. I have also postponed all my public engagements for the coming days.”
In memory of COUNSEL JAMINA APIO, who diligently represented the applicants, we highlight this landmark ruling:

Over twenty (20) years later, the effects of Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) war continue to torment the lives of many people in northern Uganda.
At the BarefootLaw Box in Paicho, we receive numerous cases whose root causes date back to results of the twenty-year war. The association of war victims requested a legal training, with local leaders present, on various barriers the face in accessing justice.
Today, we trained over one hundred (100) people from various sub counties and villages in Gulu district. The main area of interest included human rights, property rights relating to customary land ownership, and stigmatization from community and some of the local leaders.
It was a carthatic engagement for many of the people as it gave them an avenue to openly express their feelings towards some of the injustices they face.
The lawyers emphasized the law’s firm stand on non discrimination and dignity of all people among others.
By the end of the session, both parties agreed to follow the guidance of the law and vowed make use of the services at the BarefootLaw Box to help them navigate more legal challenges.
Heaven gained an angel today. Judge Frank Caprio wasn’t just a judge—he was a symbol of kindness, empathy, and humanity. Through his compassion, he showed us that justice can be both fair and full of heart. His legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace ❤️🩹🙏
👏🏾 Our interns are making moves!✨
This is an exciting (and equally nerve-wracking😩) week for the students in our internship program.
🎯 As part of BarefootLaw’s mission to use the law to provide accessible legal services to people across Africa, resolving their legal issues, the Internship program offers law students a hands-on opportunity to understand and serve their communities.
This week, the students are organising and hosting physical and virtual community engagement sessions for people within their neighbourhoods 👥👩🏻💻👥. This is an opportunity for them to immerse themselves in their communities, interact and collaborate with local justice and livelihood mechanisms such as courts, police, local council courts, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), women’s groups, local business associations, and individuals facing legal issues, to feel the pulse of the community.
“The BarefootLaw Internship Program is a vital initiative that
bridges the gap between academic learning and practical legal experience. By engaging directly with their communities, students not only enhance their skills and knowledge, but also contribute to the broader mission of improving access to justice in Uganda,” Winnifred Acio, the head of the Internship Program, says.
🔥To our students, "No cap, y'all fire!"
Tonight, I shall host Gerald Abila; a barrister of uncommon vision, founder of BarefootLaw, and a man who dared to give the powerless access to justice through technology.
From the streets of Kampala to the stages of Davos, from local villages to global platforms like @TEDx, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum, Gerald has stood as a sentinel for the voiceless.
He built Winnie, the world’s first AI-powered lawyer, not for profit, but for people. For this audacity of hope, he has been hailed Social Entrepreneur of the Year, a Legal Rebel, and one of the 100 Leading Legal Strategists on the planet.
Tonight at 7PM East Africa Time, on YouTube, TikTok, and X-Space, we ask:
Access deferred, or access delivered? How do we make it work?
Please tune in

🙌🏿Today was one for the books!
A first of definitely many to come.
We joined the Muslim community in Nsinze at Masjid Abdul Swamad for a legal sensitization on the issues that bar them from accessing justice.
It was an amazing conversation between the Statutory law and Sharia law and how the two can work together to ensure ammicable dispensation of justice for the community.
We thank Sheik Adam Kironde for inviting BarefootLaw to the Mosque and continuously reffering people within his community to the BarefootLaw Box in Nsize to access legal information and services.
These efforts to reach deeper into communities are supported through our partnership with @Clifford_Chance. Thank you.
Together, we’re creating a peaceful community where the people of Nsinze can thrive.
🎉It’s been 25 years of @cgc_uganda and we are honored to be part of this story.
Today we hosted a team from CGC, led by their patrons and the Executive Director. We were honored to meet one if their founders, Dr. Ann F. Hayes, and former Executive Director, Margaret Kasozi.
CGC has been a crucial partner in BarefootLaw efforts to help more women and girls to overcome barriers to accessing legal information and services. In 2023, they were voted one of the winners of the Justice Innovation Challenge for their work with “Safe Spaces” for girls (VIDEO: https://t.co/Fmg3riqU55…).
We later went on to work together to extend their work through the “Haven Project” which supported more girls with livehood skills and legal information.
🏆 It is a great honour to be recognized for our contribution to their work through our partnership.
Congratulations CGC 👏🏾

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT LABOUR?
#HappyLabourDay2025
👩🏾⚖️First labour laws mean employment laws.
🧑🏾💼Civil Servants (Government Workers) and Private workers have two different Employment Laws. Your employment bible is the Employment Act while government workers have the Public Standing orders.
📚Whatever you cannot find in these labour laws, the court will tell you from its experience of dealing with employment disputes.
So what does the law have to say about employment?
We made you a playlist of videos on Work & Employment!
Happy watching: https://t.co/4FFqISeocD
If you’re in Namutumba this week, you’re likely to spot a BarefootLaw lawyer. if you haven’t already met one at our BarefootLaw Box in Nsinze Sub-County.

🧑🏾🏫Today we are engaging with local leaders for a refresher training on the law and how to handle cases that have been brought to their offices.
⛪️👩🏾Tomorrow we shall engage with religious leaders and host a hybrid training for women’s saving groups on legal approaches to their issues.
