There's a rule at this World Cup with his name attached to it. He didn't score it. He didn't ask for it either.

Back in February, during a Champions League playoff at Estádio da Luz, Vinícius Jr. scored to put Real Madrid ahead. What should have been a routine goal celebration quickly turned into chaos. Benfica players surrounded him, tensions exploded, and shoving matches broke out as teammates rushed in to separate everyone. Cameras then caught Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni pulling his shirt over his mouth while speaking to Vinícius. Vinícius immediately alerted the referee, who stopped the match for around ten minutes while the incident was investigated. After the disciplinary process, Prestianni was found guilty not of racism, but of homophobic conduct, receiving a six match suspension, with three matches suspended.

Two months later, FIFA and IFAB approved a new rule allowing referees to send off any player who deliberately covers their mouth during a heated confrontation to conceal what is being said. The rule made its debut at the very World Cup Vinícius is playing in. He never campaigned for it. He never asked for football to change its laws. Yet one of the tournament's newest disciplinary measures exists because of an incident that unfolded around him.

This also wasn't the first time Vinícius and controversy had collided. In 2023 at Mestalla, after enduring racist abuse from sections of the crowd, he reacted by striking out toward Hugo Duro and was shown a red card. Days later, the Spanish Football Federation overturned that dismissal after reviewing the events, while Valencia were punished with the closure of part of Mestalla. Two years later, Vinícius was sent off at the same stadium again, this time after pushing his hands into goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski's face during another heated confrontation.

Is this simply a player who struggles to control his emotions? Or is it the story of a player who repeatedly found himself at the centre of football's ugliest moments, reacting under a spotlight so bright that the game itself eventually rewrote part of its rulebook?

Was it just anger? Or was it the only alarm system that football finally couldn't ignore?
