One of the key speakers at the event reportedly accused people from the South West region of committing atrocities against Hawiye civilians through Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region. He also claimed that individuals from the South West were being relocated to the Adan Yabaal area to establish new settlements—an allegation perceived by many as an attempt to inflame inter-clan tensions.

While the stated purpose of the conference was to foster unity among the Hawiye and mobilize efforts against Al-Shabaab, critics argue that the event descended into a forum for tribal incitement. Several inflammatory remarks were made against communities in South West, Gedo, and northern Somalia, turning what was intended to be a counter-terrorism dialogue into a divisive tribal gathering.

The situation has been further exacerbated by the Somali federal government’s financial support for the conference. Observers and civil society leaders have condemned the government’s role, labeling its involvement as “shameful” and warning that such tribal favoritism could deepen national divisions at a time when unity is most needed.

Adding to the controversy, the state-run Somali National Television (SNTV) broadcast the event in full, amplifying the divisive rhetoric to a national audience.
