I believe it was Bobby who mentioned that other twins from the study committed suicide as well, which leads me to wonder whether the etiology of those suicidal thought are sociocultural in origin. #lincpsych
There is a lot that could be going into this. This is the perfect situation to analyze and wonder if the aetiologies of depression are more biological, cognitive, or sociocultural. #lincpsych
It seems as if Eddy had more severe mental issues than David and Bobby. This raises the question of how much genetics and DNA play a role on the development of depression and other disorders. #lincpsych
Maybe Eddy had more ACEs than the other 2. Maybe he had a more adverse childhood. Maybe his childhood was not as rough as another one's but his cognitive skills and behavior were less apt to deal with his problems. #lincpsych
The idea that many of these twins/triplets had parents with some sort of mentaL illness or issues makes the whole study even more ethically concerning. #lincpsych
To say they would put the dilemma of nature or nurture to rest is a bit extreme. Conducting a twin study with results that support a certain side is not proof to confirm a theory. It may support that theory, but it does not confirm it. That is not how science works. #lincpsych
Also, the study is not generalizable. It was done with identical babies from a single adoption agency, at a single country. How could you say you can confirm a theory if you haven't even tried having diversity within your participants? #lincpsych
They seem to be attributing every single one of their similarities to the fact that they are triplets, which could be a form of confirmation bias. #lincpsych
I think as triplets who recently found each other after many years, they might be influenced by confirmation bias. Some of their behaviors seem as pretty common ways of thinking or things many people do, regardless of whether they have a twin or not. #lincpsych
Which skills were more biological in origin and which were more sociocultural? Were they inherited through their genetics or were they developed due to the environment surrounding each of them throughout their respective upbringings? #lincpsych
After being told what researchers would make them do, it seems as if they were trying to study the similarity of their cognitive skills, how similar they would be if raised in different environments. We could assume they were trying to study nature vs. nurture #lincpsych
It makes it seem as if they knew that what they were doing was not ethical. They knew it was not right, which is extremely infuriating to say the least. #lincpsych
I think that the fact that the study which separated identical babies was secret already makes me skeptical of whether they did this with no malintention. If there were no ethical concerns, why would they keep the study a secret? #lincpsych
