This is a Mozambican professor who has dressed as a female Zimbabwean prisoner in solidarity with the pro-democracy women detained on June 16 for meeting to commemorate the Day of the African Child.

Prof. Adriano Nuvunga is the director of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), an organisation that promotes democracy and protects human rights in Mozambique.

Among the pro-democracy women jailed without trial by Emmerson Mnangagwa is a woman with a one-year-old child at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
Another woman activist was denied the right to bury her child, who died after Mnangagwa imprisoned her.

Another female activist, Namatai Kwekweza, was dragged off a plane and held incommunicado for eight hours and accused of committing a crime on a date when she was not even in Zimbabwe.

All this is happening in the context of the SADC Summit taking place in Harare this week.
The timing of these arrests and torture abuses of pro-democracy activists in Zimbabwe, coinciding with the upcoming SADC Summit, is ironic.

It is alarming to see the Zimbabwean regime seemingly cracking down on civil society and opposition voices ahead of a regional meeting that should, in theory, promote peace and cooperation.

Professor Adriano Nuvunga's act of solidarity by dressing as a female Zimbabwean prisoner highlights the international attention these issues are receiving.

It is important for SADC member states to address these concerns and hold Zimbabwe accountable for upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

As the summit approaches, regional leaders must demonstrate their commitment to these values and work towards a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and freedoms of all Zimbabweans.

Failure to do so will lead to unintended consequences that will affect the whole region, as the immigration crisis in South Africa that has been created by Mnangagwa’s kleptocratic regime!
