This is literally a regista with so much flair, flamboyance and dribbling that allowed him get into 10 zones.

Mikel was neither a heavy carrier nor a volume shooter. Mikel played in a midfield that had workhorses like Essien, Lampard and Ballack, and if he wanted to roam forward he had enough legs to cover for him, but he didn't have a nose for goal. He didn't score a lot and so couldn't play close to the striker (1 goal in this tourney against Switzerland was a PK). Neither did he have the relentless engine to be a box to box.

He was a metronome. And from this comp you can see his game was built around control, ball retention, evading opposition press, opening up passing lanes and dictating tempo. Which was why Mourinho usually threw him into matches when it became end to end and he wanted to regain control.

You can claim Mourinho ruined him, but I'd rather Mourinho was a visionary who saw where football was headed and profiled him correctly because this is literally a Rodri, Busi, Jorginho with more flair. Or a Paul Pogba with less carrying and shooting but with better ball security.
