Imperialists keep having to invent socialist massacres to deflect from the reality that capitalism is one continuous, world-spanning genocide.
We often hear about the 140 people who died trying to cross the Berlin Wall over a period spanning 28 years. But we never hear about the 9,900 people who die every single day because they lack access to healthcare — a direct outcome of imperialism's denial of sovereignty to the global periphery.
We often hear about some number of people who supposedly died at Tiananmen Square in 1989 — a highly-contested narrative. But we do not hear about the 1,545 people who die every single day because of Western sanctions — 38 million people in total over a fifty year period.
Given the sheer barbarism of the imperialist world system, we should marvel at how mild the actions of socialist and revolutionary projects are by the standards of the systemic and unrelenting violence they are forced to confront. And there is certainly no need for progressive forces to be apologetic or ashamed about these measures.
🇨🇺 If Fidel Castro was such a “failure”, why does Cuba — a small, sanctioned island nation — still outperform many capitalist countries in healthcare, literacy and life expectancy?
🔴Before Castro:
• Cuba under Batista was a US-backed dictatorship
• Huge inequality, mafia control and rural poverty existed
• Large parts of the population lacked education and healthcare
• Opposition was brutally crushed
🔴After the revolution:
• Literacy campaigns made Cuba nearly 100% literate
• Universal free healthcare and education were established
• Cuba achieved one of the world’s highest doctor-per-capita ratios
• Infant mortality became lower than even the United States in some years
• Cuban doctors were sent worldwide for humanitarian missions
Yes, Cuba has political restrictions and economic hardships. But pretending Batista and Castro were “the same” is historically dishonest.
One regime protected elite interests and foreign corporations. The other transformed social indicators despite decades of US sanctions, blockade and constant destabilization attempts.
You cannot seriously discuss Cuba without mentioning:
➡️ Free healthcare
➡️ Free education
➡️ Land reforms
➡️ Massive reduction in illiteracy and poverty
➡️ Independent foreign policy
➡️ One of the best public health systems in the developing world.
It’s crazy how the actual, serious hasbara narrative about all these reports is that there’s a giant global antisemitic conspiracy in which all humanitarian institutions are collaborating with mainstream news outlets in a sinister plot to make Israel look bad.
"Every artist, every scientist, every writer must decide now where he stands. The artist must take sides. He must elect to fight for freedom or for slavery. I have made my choice. I had no alternative."
Paul Robeson.
We are living through a moment of a defining moral choice: will you stand against the genocide in Palestine? Or will you surrender to the forces of darkness and repression.
We have made our choice. We had no alternative. Free Palestine ✌️🇵🇸
Ukraine is the prototype. This will happen in Poland, Germany, France and Britain in the not-too-distant future. By 2028?
Comrades keep telling me no men in Britain want to fight against Russia for our corrupt govt.
Marco Rubio once claimed his family fled Cuba's Revolution in 1959 after Fulgencio Batista was ousted. When that was debunked with official documentation proving his family fled the U.S.-backed Batista regime, which was killing its opposition in the streets, he responded by saying his story was based on family lore passed down by his parents and grandparents, not official accounts.
And that, my friends, is how many Cuban Americans derive their opinions about Cuba. Hyperbolic “family lore” that when faced with even the slightest scrutiny, doesn't add up or jibe with historical records. That's why they get mad at you and call you names when you meet them with the slightest push back.
And I get it. Challenging decades-old false narratives that they lived their whole lives believing and accepting they were lied to my family is hard.
But it's absolutely necessary.
Listen to my people on the island. Give their stories more weight. They are no one's enemy. They just want to be left alone and to live without penalty.
The Ukrainian regime has normalised Nazism to such an extent that they managed to piss off the biggest supporter of the proxy war against Russia. Notably, every other European country seems totally fine with it.
Fidel Castro responds to Forbes ranking him among the world's richest rulers:
"I challenge them all. That little thief Bush, the CIA, the 33 US intelligence agencies. If they can prove I hold a single offshore account -- even one dollar -- I resign immediately."
The first part of our investigation into the modern South African economy is out now! In this one we look at the structure of the South African economy and argue that other than the creation of a black bourgeoisie, very little has actually changed since 1994. What happened then was that the South African white borugeois realised that they could keep things pretty much as they were as long as the dealt in a small layer of black, wannabe bourgeois into the bargain. The South African working class has been paying the price for this ever since then.
