The 16th century is when Harar became the capital of the Adal Sultanate, and also coincides with the building of the djugol, the city wall, and the earliest Harari manuscripts.

A note on the archaeological evidence cited.

Mirza writes that excavations show the modern city dates to the 16th century.

Actually, the excavations were carried out in & around mosques in the old city & C14 dates do not predates 16th c.
