I feel a stark contrast between the time I first started working as a TA in (another uni than the one I graduated from) and now. I remember how lonely it felt at first compared to now. I’m so grateful for the love and affection my students have for me from the bottom of my heart.
LLMs are intelligent, but they clearly aren't conscious?
You could (incredibly slowly) run an LLM by hand by doing the matrix calculations with a pen and paper, would that be conscious? There is zero difference between doing that and doing it on a GPU except its faster.
IMO, clothing is largely about semiotics, which means your judgment of an outfit is heavily shaped by what you think the outfit means. But when a style is wholly foreign to an observer, it will look interesting when it has "shape and drape," which is to say the outfit has a distinctive silhouette other than the human form. This is why the outfits below are interesting, whereas a pair of slim-fit chinos teamed a limp polo shirt or t-shirt typically does not look good unless an observer fetishizes the body underneath.
Imagine Latin were treated as a sacred language, and Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Romanian were not allowed to be called languages, but only “mere dialects of Latin”. At best, they would be labelled “Italian Latin”, “Spanish Latin”, “Portuguese Latin” or “Romanian Latin”.
Their speakers would all simply be called “Latins”, and their languages officially treated as forms of “Latin”, even though actual spoken Latin had long disappeared from daily life.
Then foreigners would go and learn Classical Latin, expecting to use it across those “Latin countries”, only to discover that nobody actually speaks it at home or in the street.
Ridiculous, no?
Well, that is essentially the situation with Arabic.
@ChoukaiKaiNi Correct. It's entirely a cultural thing though. Not contributing to the work at large is meant to shame you and deprive you into quitting.
As such, a tactical deployment of handful of Italians could easily destroy Japanese economy by lazing around in right companies
BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux!
It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification.
Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more!
File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier.
The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too.
Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update.
Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete.
There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! https://t.co/Oxr6VMZIhB

Disruptions including higher freight and insurance costs began hindering Egypt’s exports within days of the conflict, Mohamed Fouad, an economist and member of the parliament's economic committee, said. https://t.co/4gvSGWP8ep
@Zeinobia Ancient Egyptians used to worship ‘Tawaret’, a protective goddess of childbirth and fertility. Hippos were absolutely present in Egyptian culture.
The thing about many (most?) AI productivity hacks is that they're only a hack if you're the only person using them.
I was recently tasked with evaluating proposals submitted by faculty members. Several of the proposals contained substantial amounts of AI slop. I was offended to have to read slop but here's the thing: I'm sure that those same people who used an LLM to write their proposals would be deeply offended if I shoved their proposal into an LLM and asked it to decide whether to approve it and to write feedback!
Those who use AI for tasks like this are counting on being the only ones to 'defect.' They want to get away with submitting slop and yet receive a real human being's attention and judgment on whether to approve their proposal. It's a classic prisoner's dilemma: they have an incentive to defect (send slop) but if the reader does the same thing, we get a world of slop-bots talking to one another.
It strikes me that the same dynamic takes place in other areas: "I use AI to handle all of my emails" -- well, again, that really only works when everyone else is writing their own emails. Otherwise, we get a world of slop-bots endlessly emailing each other.
"I use AI to screen resumes and perform initial interviews" -- this only works until everyone starts using AI to make resumes and give initial interviews. What good is it to have my AI agent "interview" your AI agent? It's just a world of slop-bots endlessly interviewing each other.
"I use AI to polish up my writing assignments" or "I use AI to make my grading more efficient" -- again, this is only a "hack" if you're the only one defecting. Otherwise, we have a campus full of slop-bots endlessly talking to one another and we've lost what was precious.
