The next @_AfricanUnion Youth Envoy must be someone who actually knows the challenges the young people of our continent are facing day in and day out.

We cannot just repeat the old
methodologies, sit in the same echo chambers, and expect different results. The reality of our generation cannot be understood purely through policy briefs, it has to be lived.

#Agenda2063 is only going to become a reality when young people are given the space to actively contribute to it and completely own it. It’s time for a leadership style that bridges high-level multilateral diplomacy with the raw, grassroots truth of our people.

We belong at the primary decision-making table, part and parcel of every major conversation. Let's shift the paradigm. 🌍✊

On behalf of the IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. @DrWorkneh Gebeyehu, I was honored to officially launch the synchronized cross-border vaccination program against priority Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) in both Dugo Location (Wajir County, Kenya) and Baadyare Village (Moyale District, Ethiopia). This historic initiative marks a major milestone for regional integration and pastoralist livelihoods under our mandate, aiming to vaccinate 2.7 million livestock by the end of the cycle—with 700,000 animals already protected. Notably, history was made in Wajir County with the first-ever rollout of the Foot & Mouth Disease (#FMD) vaccine, reaching over 34,500 cattle so far.

As local Elders Hajj Isaak Abdow and Hajj Abdinasir Mohamed powerfully reminded us, our pastoralist communities face mounting challenges from emerging diseases, making sustained support and prolonged vaccination drives vital to ensuring no livestock are left behind. Diseases do not recognize borders, and neither should our interventions. A profound thank you to all our development partners for making this collaborative, cross-border reality possible as we work together under Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu’s leadership to secure the health and economic wealth of our communities.

Why I Am Stepping Forward for the African Union Youth Envoy

There is a profound difference between waiting for an opportunity and preparing for a mission. As I get ready to submit my formal application for the African Union Youth Envoy position, I want to share why this journey matters so deeply to me, and why it matters for the millions of young people across our continent. This is about a lifelong commitment to service, real representation, and building a direct, youth-to-youth connection that spans from the grassroots to the global stage.

A Journey Shaped by the Borderlands and Beyond

My dedication to the African youth agenda isn't abstract or academic. It is deeply personal, rooted in my very origin. I was born in Moyale, a vibrant border town between Ethiopia and Kenya. Growing up at this geographic and cultural crossroads taught me to speak six languages fluently, but its greatest gift was teaching me how to truly listen and find common ground where others see divisions.

My path, however, was also shaped by the heavy realities of displacement. As a refugee in Kenya, I lived the raw experiences of surviving on the margins. I know firsthand what it means to face systemic barriers, to feel the uncertainty of being displaced, and yet to see the immense, untapped brilliance that resides within our refugee camps and vulnerable communities.

These early chapters fueled a creative drive to redefine what leadership looks like for those of us who had to build our lives from the ground up.

Moving Past Boardrooms to Ground-Level Action

Over the years, I have worked to turn those profound life lessons into actionable advocacy, bridging the gap between high-level diplomacy and everyday reality. My path has taken me from local, on-the-ground activism to serving as the first-ever Permanent Representative of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and bringing strong, uncompromised youth voices into the multilateral spaces of the United Nations. As a young diplomat, I have navigated complex global systems and seen how policies are crafted at the highest levels. But more importantly, I have seen how often the actual, lived experiences of displaced youth, young activists, and ordinary citizens are left outside the room.

The African Union doesn't need top-down rhetoric. It needs a leadership that is actively, aggressively responsive to the actual needs of the youth.
The Leadership Our Continent Demands True continental leadership requires an organic, youth-to-youth interaction. We need an Envoy who doesn't just deliver speeches from a podium, but someone who sits with the youth on the ground, listens to their creative solutions, and builds structural pathways so they can speak for themselves. Africa’s youth, including our most vulnerable, displaced, and resilient populations, are the primary drivers of our continent’s energy and innovation right now. Our leadership must mirror that exact vitality.

I am preparing to apply for this role because I believe my journey allows me to serve as a true bridge. By combining the lived perspective of a former refugee with years of hard-earned multilateral diplomatic experience, I want to ensure that the realities of the ground shape the policies of our future. This is an open declaration of my intent to serve, to connect, and to listen. The future of Africa belongs to us, and it is time we shape it together.
