I am happy when the public service work as it should. I checked into a Max Air flight from Kano to Abuja. When we were about to board, we were told that the flight will first go from Kano to Lagos before it goes from Lagos to Abuja. It didn’t make sense to me. Other passengers persuaded me to go with it. I reluctantly boarded but wasn’t really comfortable with it. I called Madam, as I always do before take off and after landing and she said it didn’t make sense. She said it’s better just sleep in Kano and go tomorrow if the wahala is too much. I took my stuff and disembarked. They told me that I would be held at the “Crime Office” until the flight lands in Lagos. I asked what my crime was and the young Aviation Security guy smiled and said that that is just what their office in the airport is called. I followed him there. They had a comfortable sofa there but I noticed that they also had a cell with iron bars and a metal door. They were very polite and asked me to sit on the sofa. They kept asking me if I was comfortable and whether I needed to charge my phone. I used the one hour to catch up on my emails and to chat with their boss there. It turns out that he did his Youth Service in Ebonyi in 1999 and was shocked at the transformation of the place when he was there last year. After about an hour and 15 minutes, they then came to tell me that the flight had landed in Lagos and that I was free to go. They also said that they hoped that I understood that aviation security could not be compromised. I told them that I completely understood. I then revealed that I used to be DG Public Service Reforms, and that I usually make plenty trouble when things are not done properly. We agreed that Nigeria would work if everyone just did what they were supposed to do: those in government as well as members of the public. We shook hands and I gave the officer my card. A colleague of his from FAAN had joined us and I told him that I had made wahala with FAAN a few times. He thanked me for speaking out whenever I am not happy and for complying with instructions without drama. I left them feeling that the one hour that I was held for (he kept emphasising that I wasn’t being detained but was being held to keep them company) was time well spent. End.😀
