Dave Nielsen, former Army Ranger and operator with our Army SMU. He grew up in Detroit, and in interviews he credits learning to push through adversity as a kid with getting him through selection. His first combat experience was the 1989 combat jump into Panama as a young Ranger with the 75th Ranger Regiment. He later passed selection for the Unit, where he worked as an assaulter, breacher, K9 handler and sniper team member, deploying many times.
His story is bound up with his dog, Pepper. During a deployment to Iraq, Pepper was killed while rooting an enemy fighter out of a sewer hole on the banks of the Tigris River. Nielsen searched for her all night but had to leave when the sun came up, because they were in enemy territory. The mission was featured in Channing Tatum's HBO documentary War Dogs, which follows three JSOC dog handlers and their K9 partners. He has said her death changed his life, and has talked openly about the scars that followed the war.
After leaving the Army, Nielsen earned a degree in theology and biblical studies. He now co-hosts The Christology Podcast, where he talks about faith alongside his years in special operations. A man who spent a career at the sharp end, lost a partner on the objective, and went on to build a second life around meaning and faith.
One of the most lethal Wehrmacht snipers was a Lithuanian named Bruno Sutkus.
Born in East Prussia in 1924, he joined the Hitlerjugend at fourteen. As a teenager, he smuggled cigarette lighters into Lithuania and brought back bacon, butter and sausages. He later credited those trips with teaching him to avoid detection and keep his nerve.
Conscripted in 1943, he trained as a sniper in Vilnius before joining the 68th Infantry Division on the Eastern Front. He fought Soviet snipers and supported German infantry against Soviet attacks, eventually accumulating 209 credited kills. Each entry in his sniper log required confirmation.
By twenty, he had received both classes of the Iron Cross and the highest grade of the German sniper badge. In January 1945, he was wounded and appointed an instructor at a sniper school.
After the war, the Soviets conscripted him twice, and he escaped both times.
In 1949, he voluntarily accompanied a Lithuanian widow, Antanina Povilaitienė, when she was deported to Siberia. They eventually married. He spent 22 years there, working on collective farms, cutting timber and mining coal, before returning to Lithuania in 1971.
His wartime logbook survived too. A German Red Cross nurse had kept it for decades after he entrusted it to her in 1945. It later became part of his published memoir.
In the 1990s, the former Wehrmacht sniper was helping train Lithuanian soldiers in sniping. He had lived long enough to see Lithuania regain its independence and the Soviet Union disappear

Reports say former Green Beret and UFC fighter Tim Kennedy was wounded last month in the Congo, taking multiple gunshot wounds while working a private security contract.
Accounts circulating on social media claim the hit happened in an ambush around mid-September, that a tourniquet stayed on for more than five hours during an evacuation that took about eight, and that the injuries were serious enough for him to be medevaced back to the United States, with one leg at risk.
Former New Zealand SAS soldier Justin Conaglen was reportedly killed in the same incident, and a third man was also said to be wounded. New Zealand has opened an investigation into Conaglen’s death.
Some of the accounts tie the work to an American private military firm associated with Erik Prince.
