DJ Sanjoy has done something unprecedented – a feat that is making every #Bangladeshi’s heart swell with pride.
Born in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, and raised oceans away in the United States, Sanjoy Deb — known globally as DJ Sanjoy — recently performed at the opening ceremony of the ongoing 2026 #FIFAWorldCup. The 34-year-old made history by becoming the first artist of Bangladeshi origin to grace one of the grandest stages in the world.
Alongside international stars like Canadian dancer and singer Nora Fatehi and French singer-songwriter Vegedream, @sanjoyd performed the official World Cup song “Siir Siir”. But what truly moved millions of Bangladeshis was the way he intentionally represented his roots, carrying our nation close in his heart like few others ever have.
Millions tuned in, from every corner of the globe, as Sanjoy proudly displayed national symbols like the Royal Bengal Tiger, the water lily, and our red-and-green flag on his jacket sleeves. With every gesture, he seemed to announce to the world: “This is my #Bangladesh.” The video of the performance crossed six million views online in mere hours.
Sanjoy did not get to spend much of his life in Bangladesh. Yet, look at his unwavering love for our history and heritage — overflowing, selfless, unstoppable. While he could have easily enjoyed the massive global success without acknowledging his beginnings, he chooses to keep using every spotlight to uplift the land of his roots. In fact, he recently invited the FIFA President to our country, saying, “Please come to Bangladesh.”
It is youths like Sanjoy who deserve to be made the faces of our nation. If we do that, we will no longer need expensive campaigns to show the world that Bangladesh is liberal, welcoming, and brimming with talent. One living, breathing human being who carries our soul in his art will be enough.
Let us embrace this man, and bring him home. Let him perform a concert that revitalises the entire country — perhaps during Durga Puja, when the spirit of harmony is already in the air. Let him run workshops for our young local musicians. Let there be a music school in his name. And if we have the right vision and resources, let us appoint him as Bangladesh’s Cultural Advisor without further delay.
Young men like Sanjoy do not come along often in a nation’s history. Let us not fail this time to recognise a national treasure.
Let Sanjoy become an official ambassador for Bangladesh. Let us proudly make him the face of the nation – inspiring millions of other young men and women of our country, and reminding them that their people and government are committed to nurturing new talent and indigenous art.
Fascinating: the story of the Calcutta Madrasa's move to Dhaka after partition. Excited about the prospect of its archives becoming available...

I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience (part of @FrontNeurosci). It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇
Hard truth…
I can speak freely because I’m 65 years old and my pocketful of fucks is seriously depleted.
Working as a paralegal at various studios in LA for thirty years…I had the opportunity to observe studio executives closely.
They’re generally a slippery and clueless bunch who shouldn’t be allowed near anything remotely creative…but the new regime at Paramount is straight up evil.
I assure you.
These soulless bastards have nothing but contempt for a show about grace and redemption and the struggle against fascism.
ATLA is a mystery to them.
They. Do. Not. Value. The. Franchise.
I'm glad Marjane Satrapi is dead. It was evil of her to be oppressed by non-Americans. A moral woman would choose exclusively to be oppressed by Americans.
@AhmedShahAzfar Thoroughly will disagree with you on the latter part, Azfar. No one has agreed to seek an apology for the crimes against Biharis post-71 and the militarization in the CHT is ongoing. NCP, Hadi, BNP - all have been abyssmal failures on this.
@AhmedShahAzfar I wish people thought like you, Azfar but all of the political strands here have treated these communities as fifth columns. Bengali Muslim Nationalism is as pernicious as Bengali Nationalism
Far-right extremists and Islamists have more in common than either side would like to admit. In many ways, they share the same core beliefs: authoritarianism, intolerance of dissent, rigid social hierarchies, and the desire to impose their worldview on others.
Bangladesh is not an Islamic or Shariah-based state. Therefore, the question of capability is relative. The ability to prevent actions that are contrary to Shariah is not the same in every circumstance.
When insults are directed at Allah and His Messenger, or when the injunctions of the Qur'an are mocked, the level of responsibility and capability to resist such wrongdoing is of one nature. The ability to respond to the humiliation of Islamic scholars, or to attacks on Islamic culture and identity—including symbols such as the beard and cap—is of another nature. Likewise, the ability to prevent indecency and obscenity that contradict religious and social values belongs to yet another category.
The current situation surrounding the Banalata Express issue in Brahmanbaria deserves to be considered in light of this analysis. It is important to determine whether any objectionable act has occurred that may have hurt the sentiments and religious sensitivities of the faithful. If the sanctity of the sacred Baytullah Sharif has indeed been violated, then the matter is undoubtedly very serious.
In discussions surrounding the incident, serious allegations have been raised regarding the disrespect of the sacred Baytullah Sharif and the dishonoring of the highly revered Fakhr-e-Bangal, Hazrat Tajul Islam (Rahimahullah), a figure held in great esteem by the people of Brahmanbaria.
If such actions are indeed the reason behind the anger and concern of the scholars and religious-minded people, then the matter deserves immediate attention and resolution. However, if the primary issue is merely the screening of a film, then it belongs to a different category altogether.
A cloud of confusion still surrounds the matter, and the facts need to be clarified. It is also important that the concerns and protests of the scholars and the wider Islamic community be presented in a manner that is understandable and acceptable to the general public.
