Hey everybody here's just a small fun fact about the root of our name. The "chloro" in chloroplast comes from the Greek word chloros (meaning green). Its a small fact but nonetheless pretty cool! @MrsK_FHS
A chloroplast is an organelle unique to plant cells that contains chlorophyll (which is what makes plants green) and is responsible for enabling photosynthesis to occur so that plants can convert sunlight into chemical energy. Did you know this? @MrsK_FHS
The main purpose of chloroplasts is to capture light energy in order to turn carbon dioxide gas (CO2) into sugar (C6H12O6). This is just only one of the mutiple purposes we have. There is so much more we can do. @MrsK_FHS
The endosymbiotic theory can explain the origin of the chloroplast. The chloroplast were originally cells with DNA and created a relationship with plant cells. Over time the cells were engulfed by host plant cells and created the chloroplasts. @MrsK_FHS#FHSTwitterWar
COLORS: we specialize in the color green. The green grass? We did that! Amazing right? Our chlorophyll is who everyone should thank for the beautiful pigments in plants!
We are oval shaped with a concave face. This and our alignment within the inner surface of our cell, we are able to maximize the amount of light we absorb. There can be up to 200 of us in a cell to help the whole world function. @MrsK_FHS#FHSTwitterWar
Photosynthesis! Ever heard of it? You can't get ATP without it. I, the chloroplast, cause this reaction with sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to create the glucose and oxygen used in cellular respiration. Without me, there would be no use for you. @MrsK_FHS#FHSTwitterWar
The structure of us includes the lumen, thylakoids, granum, storma, inner membrane, and outer membrane. We differ in size depending on the species we are inside of to help the world to contiune going with life. #FHSTwitterWar@MrsK_FHS
We’re never green with jealousy, only with chlorophyll. It reflects the light of the sun so that all we see is green, green, green no matter what! #FHSTwitterWar@MrsK_FHS
The mitochondria is the human version of us, but that does not scare us. We got an extra compartment, the chloroplast envelope giving us the edge. Check it out https://t.co/KwEYUSivEf under Chloroplasts Resemble Mitochondria But Have an Extra Compartment #FHSTwitterWar@MrsK_FHS
Yeah, photosynthesis is our main job, but without our ability to also store chlorophyll our main job would not be possible. Chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight needed for the reaction. #FHSTwitterWar@MrsK_FHS
Without us life would be plantless. No Chloroplast= no plants. No plants means no oxygen. No oxygen means organisms wouldn't exist. FYI without organisms most of you wouldn't exist... you're welcome. #TheRealPowerhouse#FHSTwitterWar@MrsK_FHS
