Ilhan Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, served as a colonel in the Somali National Army.
That force was under the government of Mohamed Siad Barre, who ruled Somalia from 1969 until his ouster in 1991.
Barre was a military officer who take power in a coup & remained the country’s president and effective commander of the armed forces throughout the period of Nur Omar Mohamed’s documented service, including the 1977–78 Ogaden War with Ethiopia.

Barre killed 200,000 ppl in Isaaq (aka Isaq), a major Somali clan concentrated in what is now Somaliland.
In teh late 1980s the Siad Barre government waged a massive counterinsurgency in the north. Human-rights reports & later accounts describe mass killings, bombardment of cities such as Hargeisa & Burao, and other atrocities against Isaaq civilians.
Death-toll estimates vary by source; figures in the tens of thousands up to around 200,000 appear in some reporting.
Her father served as a Colonel in this army, but there is limited documentation of his specific assignments. But he was a Marxist and he was part of the army that did these atrocities.

Anyway, apparently her family are wanted in Somaliland to be tried for their crimes, that's supposedly why they fled to the America & Britain.
Her brother was in Britain & being too open about his homosexuality and in order to reign him in, that's why she married him to get him in over to the US where they could keep a better eye on him.
This last part abt them being wanted in Somaliland I haven't verified yet, so take it with a grain of salt.
But everything above that about him being a Colonel in the Army of Siad Barre & the atrocities they committed is all accurate.
