One of the fairly regular attacks I get on here, people look at my bio & see retired history & politics teacher then let loose, often with bad language! The allegation is a career of brainwashing students with left-wing & woke propaganda & bias. Many clearly had a bad time at school & have a low opinion of most teachers, especially 'lefty liberal' ones. Well, based on my experience, whilst these folk are entitled to their views, especially if bad language avoided, they are just plain wrong on the indoctrination front. Most student's core political values are shaped well before 16, when I started teaching most of them. They are far more influenced by family, peers & community, than by any teachers. I'd go further, some are born compassionate & empathetic, some aren't. Their left or right leanings begin early in life. Call it rubbish if you wish, but it's a view formed after teaching of kids & adults for over 4 decades. The old adage, show me the child & I'll show you the man, is largely correct. Consider this, do you think young Nigel, Vladimir or Donald shared their sweets in the school yard?

At the end of her long life the gifted Welsh writer Jan Morris said you only need to know one thing about every person you meet. Their race, religion, politics, gender, social class, nation, sexuality, tells you very little. What matters is - are they kind? As I age & think of the thousands I've met of all races, identities & creeds, I know she is right; kindness, or the lack of it, trumps all else; try it.
