Lemme give you a rundown of how the life of a medic ๐จ๐ฝโโ๏ธin Kenya is. You might need to have a sit and a drink โ
1. Joining Uni- straight As from high school eeh. Choppi!! ๐ You get posted to uni, very few govt sponsored slots, BUT hundreds available via own sponsorship for monetary benefit ๐ค so majority fall kwa kujilipia (200k a sem siet X 2 sems X 6yrs) siet!
2. Finish Uni-after evading retakes and sups for 6 to 7 years, with multiple bottles of KC and Kibao hanging by the kitchen shelves, you graduate ๐จโ๐(call me big fish) but the govt has to post you to join an internship centre to get your licence (mandatory) okay?
3. Posting Internship - you wait for months๐๏ธ forming WhatsApp groups, having hope (majamaa next month itawai), fighting with MoH for your right to be posted. After several mvutanos, and teargas ๐ซ you finally get posted siet!
4. Internship Pay- you join your centre, eish dagetari!!! but somehow you won't be paid the first 3 to 5 months. ๐ญ๐ญWatu kwa kijiji wanataka mbuzi ya dakitari ๐ฅฒ๐ฅฒSo? You go back to the streets. Yaani labcoat mpya inatembezwa MoH!! Mvutaaaano till you get paid and it goes smoothly from there
5. Finish Internship - you're done hurrah! But guess what you need to PAY 17K TO KMPDC TO GET THE LICENCE YOU JUST WORKED FOR FOR A YEAR ๐si hiyo ni kriminoo?
6. Unemployment - this is a depressing period where newly licenced doctors look for jobs. "2 year experience required" utoe wapi? Government jobs? You pay bribes as high as millions to get the job. County Jobs? You go for interviews kumbe 5 people wenye jina ya huko already paid and were given the job even before you finished internship ๐๐so you survive on vibaruas (locum). Shaka!
7. Masters-umesurvive huku nje mashida nini nini. In this course, it's like almost close to 100% that you need to specialise to be relevant. So universities? 2 years work experience ๐ฅฒ๐ฅฒutoe wapi? Umeshinda ukitarmack. Kiatu imeisha lateral side of the heel๐ญ๐ญYou get the chance to get into UoN and the likes. Yeeeey!!! So you study as you work for a hospital attached to the uni...get this... WITHOUT PAY๐๐yaani free??!! and they expect you to pay school fees. And masters sio 2 years. 4, 5, 6, even 7 years na hatujahesabu kuretake mwaka mzima good God๐๐by the time daktari anatoka ako na loans za kido 3 mirrionz. Siet
Anyway if you know anyone who wants to join this "long ago the so called glorious course" of ours. Tell them NO. It's not worth the pain. It isn't. The calling is not answering ๐ญ๐ญthe calling won't pay your bills. Ni hujuma aiseh ๐
