I think the root of the critiques about Moonlight comes from the fact that there’s next to no Black queer representation in media to begin with.
Moonlight can’t be everything. It’s just 1 movie. 1 story that is a very real experience for a lot of people.
@undamipengting I’m a bit confusing how you’re saying hes DL tho? No where in the movie did he publically identify as straight while being intimate with men in secret. He very much wasn’t intimate with anyone else since his teens; men or women.
@undamipengting ends on somewhat of an inconclusive note and we have to remember there’s only so much you can fit into one movie. Maybe Chiron goes on to be an openly gay man we don’t know. His journey might just be at a different pace.
@undamipengting of us start in a similar place, go through similar feelings like those depicted in the movie. Again, your experience might not be exactly the same and that might be true for others but I can bet there are a lot more people that relate than you think. The movie also
Of course the movie isn’t above criticism, but I think we reach this point when talking about Black films a lot, & it makes me think okay….would we be saying these things if there were just more Black queer films? If there were more stories that people could resonate with?
