IMO if you have the ability to produce your own shows(showcases) it’s the BEST move granted there’s the professionalism aspect of things as well…
As an established Comedian and Brand what are the first steps to producing a GREAT Show (Showcase)?
I just do not believe that as many comedians will flock to showcase shows to get a quick 5-6 mins of exposure once they know how long networks eat off of their material.
Once comics realize that in exchange for $1000 (minus taxes and commissions) you are giving up 5 to 6 minutes of material that no longer belongs to you and the party you were giving it to is going to make that $1000 back on you tenfold in digital royalties.
They do not need the networks for exposure the way they once did. But now the networks will need the comedians as they physically reset themselves and look to create cheaper products.
The belief that television was the gateway to grow your career as a comedian is a lie that evaporated about a decade ago, and there have been so few ways for new comedians to showcase themselves that over the last 10 years, they have created their own ecosystems and strategies.
Every network screaming broke and cancelling shows + writers strike pending. All points to rebirth of the rebirth of Stand-up showcase shows.(even cheaper than reality show) will be fun to see how many youngjns decline offers & go DTC (YouTube, etc.) Matt Rife a good case study.
Showcase comedy shows that Spotlight multiple comedians been dead for a long time. a plant that networks & streamers neglected to water. If the bottom continues to fall out of scripted & the writers strike hits, it’ll be interesting to see how they attempt to revive this format.

At the end of the day, Stand Up Comedy remains a constant internal battle of chasing the immediate flame of exposure versus the fiscal long game of gradual success. There is no right or wrong choice.
