The “Neo-Soul” era of music was beloved by Black folks. It was focused on Black love, beauty, celebration, relationships (and dealing with them in a humane way) and countering anti-Black stereotypes. Badu, Maxwell, Angie Stone, D’Angelo, India Arie, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry, Bilal, and I can keep going on. These artists had themes within their music that encouraged togetherness. They all had ballads and records that could be played at the club, lounge, the house, in the car alone, with your partner, and your children. It was short lived, but it was dope living through that era.
