Gene Breeden
Truck driver chokes on a drink at the wheel: footage becomes a warning for the industry

Gene Breeden had barely covered a mile when his trip went badly wrong. While driving an 80,000-pound truck, he began choking on a drink.

Dashcam footage from inside his cab, now circulating on LinkedIn, shows him struggling to breathe and then losing control of the vehicle. He is thrown around the cabin and appears to black out.

Rob Carpenter, who posted the video, wants it to serve as a reminder that drivers should pull over before eating or drinking. In his view, Breeden did nothing wrong, and once the choking began there was nothing he could have done.

Carpenter argues that the trucking industry puts plenty of effort into crashes caused by deliberate choices, such as speeding, phone use, excessive hours and poor hiring, and that this focus is fully deserved. But he points to another category that gets far less attention. He cites a study on large truck crash causation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which found that in about 12% of cases where the truck was assigned the critical reason for the crash, the driver had fallen asleep, suffered a heart attack or seizure, or was otherwise physically impaired. According to Carpenter, nobody likes to discuss this category because there is no one to blame, and such crashes are not always survivable.

He also recalled a March 2013 crash near Davis, California. A driver choked on food while driving, lost consciousness and crossed all the eastbound lanes of I-80. Two people in a BMW died.

Carpenter's advice is simple. Drivers should eat and drink while parked, because no sandwich is worth a mile of highway with nobody steering. Other road users should give extra room to any truck that appears to be drifting, since they can't know what is happening in the cab.

Breeden is reported to have retired after the crash.
