“When they found my son, his heart was still beating, but he died on the way to the ambulance,” said Stepan’s father, Oleh.
Stepan Shpak was only 2 years old. Two days before his death, he had started asking to sleep in his own crib.
His mother, Iryna, and three-month-old sister were in another room during the strike.
A door, blown onto them by the explosion, shielded them from debris, saving their lives.
Stepan’s grandmother was seriously injured.
Stepan was killed on March 17, 2022, in Novi Petrivtsi, Kyiv region, when a russian missile hit a multi-story building.
Part of the second floor collapsed onto the first, burying the apartment where he was sleeping in his crib.

Russia has wiped out the historic Swedish village in Ukraine
For more than three centuries, a small Swedish community survived in Ukraine. Now it is on the verge of disappearing entirely.
The village of Gammalsvenskby has been flattened, and only two people remain after an elderly woman recently passed away.
The village, located along the Dnipro River in Kherson, is home to descendants of Swedes who were forcibly relocated there in the 18th century after Russia conquered Estonia.
Now the centuries old community may be nearing its end.
The village has been hit brutally hard. According to those who have managed to flee, the Russian army fires at anything that moves.
When Russia launched its full scale invasion in February 2022, they occupied the village, only to be driven out in November that same year. Before withdrawing, they tore down every power pole, mined the entire area, and blew up the main road, “Kungsvägen,” which had been built for a royal visit in 2008.
The remaining villagers still speak a form of 18th century Swedish.
Today, Russian forces sit just across the Dnipro and bombard the area daily.
The terror bombing continues, and every road is mined.
