In 2019, Dennis Ngaruiya became the center of a national media storm when his family rejected a state-gifted house from President Uhuru Kenyatta. Five years prior, the talented schoolboy had wowed the President with a poem, earning a personal invitation to State House and a promise of a brand-new home.

However, Ngaruiya supported his mother's decision to refuse the Nakuru County house, sharing her fears that the completely unfenced property left them highly vulnerable to security threats.

The young poet later expressed heartbreak over the situation, revealing that neighbors began mocking him as a "reject" before local administrators ultimately reallocated the home to another family.
