@teresainnj You really believe your government doesn’t owe you anything as a citizen? Genuinely nothing? What is the government for, then? Like what is it’s purpose if it doesn’t owe their citizens anything?
You deserved help then, like [x group] deserves help now. It is, i think, a kind of trauma response, the rally against progress. it takes healing to say “I didnt/dont deserve that. I want better for you.” I know this doesn’t address a LOT (YTsprmcy, sxism, etc.), but still. (2/2)
The culture around positive change breaks my heart. Debt forgiveness, gentle parenting, quiet quitting, etc.- we see the same “When i was suffering with [debt, beatings, exploitation] no one saw fit to help me so u should grin and bear it too” argument. Like, no hon (1/2)
@ellomelissa It does seem really easy, but charity like that can’t actually be the answer. It requires too much personal choice from people who may see the benefit & is too 1-time-short-term. Change like this has to come from policy (like taxing those billionaire celebs) to make it last.
@vinny_tex @aprimmer243 @CrazySexySleepy@POTUS as individuals, i guess you’re kind of right. i’d probably disagree & say there are things even u and i owe each other (decency, respect, etc). But also we live in a community under a govt so there are things the govt does owe me, u, everyone else. What good is a govt otherwise?
@GiveMeLibertyAZ@POTUS totally get your confusion. pell grants are small loans given to ppl who were lower income when receiving loans- suggests greater need overall for relief. the aim there is to bias the money forgiven toward those who need the break the most. Far from a perfect system but thats why
@kerpen@POTUS Why wouldn’t a hard working plumber look forward to his neighbor going to college? U really think unionized laborers don’t value education? Don’t have degrees? That research, community, art, etc. don’t matter to someone bc their work involves using manual labor? Tired argument.
@kellyz136@JohnJesensky99@POTUS Get you bc we all want to defend what feels like progress. But we can’t be so defensive of it that we believe the lie of “it’s this or nothing”. Praise progress, sure. But we can’t demand people be grateful when they’re suffering. This is a good thing & ALSo the govt owes better.
@Zeekthedogphd@omw@POTUS relevant to point out the timing of this order, call attn to Biden’s performative actions, point out that $10-20k for undergrad loans isn’t going to fix a lot. But any move by POTUS can be seen as ‘buying’ votes from 1 side or other. why does alleviating student debt turn u away?
@aprimmer243 @CrazySexySleepy@POTUS & that’s fantastic and you deserve to be debt free. So does everyone in the comments reminding us that $10-20k often doesn’t even tackle interest costs. Love to see a step toward student loan forgiveness, but that doesn’t mean we say thanks and settle. gov’t still owes us better.
@johndissauer@DoctahBee1@POTUS What a disappointing take. Do you have the same mentality on bankruptcy? & when the US workforce requires a (expensive) degree for nearly every job above min-wage, debt isnt really a choice. Wealth shouldn’t determine access to education. Debt forgiveness is overdue. Do better.
@TPPatriots@POTUS We’re already paying the taxes & making education more accessible via debt forgiveness is beneficial to everyone except maybe debtors. & even if we weren’t wouldn’t u rather pay a few extra bucks a year in taxes so the average 20-smthg isn’t stepping into the world with $50k debt
@TeresaKoski@StevenErtelt@POTUS You deserved to have it! Awful that our government didn’t prioritize debt forgiveness for you. It’s taken a lot of grassroots work outside of the govt to put pressure on POTUS to get here. U deserved forgiveness- so do those w debt today. isnt it good to finally see steps forward
@mattwhitlock@POTUS This is an issue of where the tax breaks exist. Families making $250K are closer to broke than to that million dollars. Be mad the actual rich aren’t being taxed properly & rally for their proper taxation, not that some 20-something will be 10k less in debt
@pamehebert@POTUS You deserved to have it. You never should have been burdened with debilitating student debt. Those still struggling deserve it too & while it sucks that it’s too late for your loans, isn’t it good that someone gets a bit of that burden alleviated?
