@FightofFaith I never claimed that he said it or even intentionally implied it; I stated what he taught and the implications of those teachings. Can you tell me where I misrepresented his teachings and where I went wrong in coming to my conclusions?
As far as I know, Calvin never said those words or even intentionally implied that preaching the Gospel was either unnecessary or useless. However, his teachings lead only to such a conclusion.
If one’s eternal destination was unalterably determined before one was ever created, then hearing the Gospel preached cannot possibly have ang effect on one’s salvation and/or destination.
Calvin’s teachings also make God look like an unjust God for creating most people without the ability to respond to and obey Him and then subjecting them to eternal punishment for not doing something that He, Himself, didn’t give them them the ability to do.
I have heard a great number of Calvinists preach many aspects of the Gospel in ways that are indescribably powerful, but their TULUP related doctrines undermine their other wonderful preaching.
Look up Soteriology 101 and listen to Leighton Flowers. He is a former Calvinist and explains these issues very well.
Calvin believed that predestination meant that God chose, before the foundations of the earth, whom He would save (the elect) and whom He would not (those who go to Hell).
He taught that man is totally incapable of not only responding to the Gospel, but totally incapable for even desiring to respond to the Gospel and that the only way that people can repent and believe in Christ and respond to the Gospel is if God had already predestined for them to do so.
He taught that if you are one of the elect, that there is nothing you can do to lose your election and that if you are not one of the elect, there is nothing you can do to become one of the elect.
So, preaching the Gospel is not needed for the elect and is useless to the unelect.
I'm the closest I've ever been to permanently deleting all of my social media and getting rid of my internet connection. It all just makes me angry, depressed and sick to my stomach. This is not what human lives were meant for.
